Hi Lionel - I did the neck profile of a 96 Silo Special on the 08/11/01 post (submitted through Spudmurphy) - it has the neck widths at the nut, 5th and 12th, but are you looking for the actual measurement of thickness at those spots?

Hi all, newbie (but longtime lurker) here. This discussion has been a huge help to me so far, but I'm hoping that you can all help me out a little more.

I'm currently having a guitar built for me, and I've been dithering a little on the neck shape. About a month ago, I had the opportunity to play a second-hand Music Man Silhouette in a local store here, H/S/S with a black scratchplate, well broken in maple neck and fretboard, and what I can only guess would be a clear rootbeer/tobacco-esque finish, only a little lighter. It played like a dream, and I've always wanted to own a Musicman, but I couldn't buy it immediately due to having my money tied up in the custom guitar, and when I did manage to free up some cash, it had been sold. Duh!

Some of the patrons of this board have very kindly uploaded drawings of the neck shapes of some Musicman guitars, which I'm going to use when I have the neck of mine shaped. But I'd like to request if any MM owners can help me out with thicknesses from back to front at the relevant points on the neck.

Also, can anyone advise or recommend the most comfortable neck shape? I really liked the shape of the Silhouette, which felt quite narrow, but not too narrow so as to cause hand fatigue. But I've also read a lot about the neck shape of the Luke, which a lot of people seem to like. Sadly, the stores where I live wouldn't stock an MM guitar on spec, it's more things like Teles, Strats and Schecters, so I don't have any opportunity to play any MMs. Any assistance that you guys can provide in helping me to come to a decision would be much appreciated. Ta.

I love the axis neck, but the best for me is the AL, the luke neck is also nice for me - but I spoke to some knuckleheads who didn't like it - if you're in Scotland poor pickings for balls in stock, come to my house you can play mine!

This thread is a useful one; the intent of which is to provide neck profile information for current and future owners of EBMM guitars. This can aid tremendously in choosing which model is the most aligned with individual taste/preference.

You appear to be asking for information which would in essence allow you to copy a proprietary product. This practice is generally frowned upon manufactuer owned forums.

Cheers mate, appreciate the reply. I'm looking for as comfortable a shape as possible. I'm used to a C shape, but am game to try something different. You're right about EBMM guitars in music stores, they're as rare as rocking horse cack! I loved the Silo I played, it was well broken in, looked like it had seen more than a few gigs. Obviously, someone else was attracted by it too.

While I appreciate the points you've made in your post, I'm quite certain that neck shape can't be under copyright or trademarked. If that were the case, EBMM would surely be violating other manufacturer's patents somewhere along the line. And so, for that matter would every other luthier out there, like John Suhr, Sadowsky etc. I'd understand your concerns if I'd posted up that I was planning to make a 4+2 headstock, add a Luke decal and pass it off as official product, but the guitar I'm having constructed is nowhere close to being a Luke copy. All I asked for was advice and assistance on helping me choose a comfortable neck shape, and it's your choice whether to help out or not.

    Oooh, hard decisions brother.

Are you absolutely no way/no how able to stay with a stock EBMM model?

I reckon if you get a chance to bond with another Silo, you'll want it.

I wish! The missus is already quietly "contemplating" my outlay on a Sustainiac system, a Bill Lawrence L-500XL, an SD Little '59 and Hot Stack, and a Floyd Rose Speedloader setup, which I decided to buy instead of booking a holiday this year. And that's all before I even get started on the construction bills. I think if I told her I needed to order a brand new $1600 Silo on the off chance that I'd fall in love with it, I'd very quickly find myself needing new accomodation!

    Hi and welcome.
It's a bit difficult for me to measure at the 1st fret with the stings on , but a lot easier at the 12th.

    1st fret = 22mm
    12 th fret 23mm

thank you - one question - are you measuring next to or on the fret? hopefully next to because that would be a nice thickness!
