    What's wrong with my axis?

The purple ass in my avatar is totally awesome for playability, tuning stability, looks and in many ways tone, but there is something lacking that I have come to expect from axis' and musicman guitars in general.

Maybe it's the rosewood (doubt it) but it definately has a wooliness to it that takes away a lot of the definition and attack from my notes particularly on the low E.

It's my first ass so am I being unfair compairing it to my regular axis? I was led to believe they were exactly the same in everyway except the bridge and switching options? Mojosteve has suggested new pickups are in order and I am partial to a tonezone/HFH combo but could it just be the way the guitar resonates? if so a new set will prob be a waste of cash since I've always sworn by the stock axis set.

I'm at the stage now where it's nearly sell up time for a Petrucci, but I don't want to take that drastic step without deferring to you guys for some thoughts first.

I see what you're saying, I know every guitar has it's own voice but if you played this one you'd see what I mean.

It's kinda like the volume pot isn't quite at full.

And really, how unfair and unrealistic is it to say a particular type of guitar has a particular type of sound? It's a generalisation sure but it's based in fact.

Did you buy this new? If it's used, could be that somebody has messed with it. Who knows what's in there?

There are some subtle differences between the Axis / Super Sport. The RW board will darken things up a bit. The p'ups on the Axis are also a tad closer to the strings. Finally, the tone pot on the SS will contribute as well. So it's not going to be exactly the same.

The Super Sport is a killer guitar. Should sound amazing. If you're concerned that something is wrong, call your dealer (if new) or customer service and they can help you diagnose if you have a problem.

2 axis, 2 silos 1 jp6 and my band mate has been through his fair share of the range too. Just because I only have 20 odd posts to my name, doesn't mean I don't know anything about Musicman. To be honest it's irrelevant anyway since all I am concerned with is my current axis.

Thanks beej, unfortunately it's used so no support from my dealer and I've also had some trouble with some mildew in the pickup cavities. Maybe I should invest in an overhaul of the wiring and some new pups?

i don't care if you got 11,000 posts.
to say that musicman guitars in general are lacking is not fair.

Lol, you misunderstand, or I've written it poorly (prob the latter). I meant that my current axis ss lacks a quality that Musicman guitars generally have, therefore something I have come to expect.

Simply put: my ass doesn't quite sound as good as I know a Musicman should

I wondered why you were having a go at me.....

EDIT: Yeah I just re-read it and it doesn't come across like I meant it too. My fault.

    Ok, that's better.

Yeah, simply put, it sounds like there's something funky with this one. Call CS or take it to a tech to sort out.

Check your bridge saddle and nut slot for gunk that could deaden the string vibration Other than that, it may just come down to the combination of fingerboard wood and bridge differences. Have you experimented with other sets of strings, maybe something brighter than what you're currently using?

If you really don't like it, perhaps I can take it off your hands?

Hey Tommy what are you like 10 years old??? Chill dude the guy said that this one is lacking compared to what he has come to expect from MM. Yeah it wasnt written in the best way, but even if he said it the other way it is his opinion so relax.
He just came on here to ask opinions on what is up. Get it??

Tone- why are you picking a fight? Fuzzracer's post was harsh, I just about said the same thing as Tommy. Turned out to be a mistake and it's cool now. No need for you to pile on.

And for the record, Tommy's a class act. One of the coolest guys I have ever met. And many a touring pro that knows him will agree.
