    need advice on a nut

So I picked up an ASS a couple/three weeks back and I just got around to some neck maintenance (clean, oil/wax). I decided to try out some Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms for the first time. All good till I noticed the low e was not sitting down in its slot in the nut. Being a dumb ass I tried to ease it in there with some slight finger pressure. It went in and the nut cracked. My bad.

So, I need a new nut and was wanting some advice. Should I order one of the compensated nuts from EBMM? Or should I be able to find something good locally? I'm also wondering if I should have a luthier install it for me? I'm a hands on person...but have never done any nut work before. I wasn't planning on buying a blank. I'm also curious if the EBMM nut would retro fit to the ASS without much work? I see the clearcoat from the headstock sort of ramps up to the edge of the stock nut...I'm guessing this is gonna get sort of "worked" and need to be filed down.

    Any input? thanks all!

I'm pretty good at doing jobs on guitars but draw the line at nut work.

pay the dosh and get a GOOD luthier to do it - who knows, he may even show you how 2 do it?

I dunno if EBMM will supply a comp nut if one wasn't installed originally - but obviously give them a try.

If ya decide to do the nut yourself - take loads of pics and talk us through it?

    Edit
Hey that's not bad advice after quaffing a good bottle of red !!! ha!

Oops, hate it when my nut cracks, sorry had to go there

I will do alot of things myself but a nut repair I would leave to others, just contact Dan at CS and let Jon repair it for you, plus you can get a real EBMM set up while its there.

Jon does killer work, the man is awesome, just bite the bullet and send it out to them in SLO, you will be happy with the result

My KOA needed some TLC and Jon sent it back better than ever.

talked to Dan and he said no way will a new compensated nut go on the old neck...said you'd destroy the neck trying to retro fit it.

    just an fyi..........

OK misread original post did not realize that it was not already a comp nut, I would still see if EBMM can replace the old nut for you, again Jon is just killer at what he does

yep....and it didn't fall apart. If you look under the low e you can see a definate crack. If you feel the neck along the top edge at the nut you can feel that the little piece has separated. Also a piece of clearcoat chipped off with a tiny splinter of wood. It's still playable....for now, but feels like you could pry the little piece off with your fingernail.

I guess I could remove the string and put a tiny drop of epoxy or glue in there and clamp it together.

thanks Tommy....appears to have worked like a charm. the crack is barely even visable and you cant feel the nut protruding from the side at all. haven't restrung it yet, but don't see any reason it wouldn't hold.
