Ah yes, I forgot that part. You're going to disagree wholeheartedly, but he's worked on numerous guitars and he said that the body sealer was a good base to start with and to leave it on.

Actually I totally understand his decision. Why would you want to really damage your nerve system while trying to remove something that actually is perfectly done by the factory?! Also it's very hard to keep the identical body contour when you are sanding of whatever had left from the sealer. So ... totally understandable. I wonder whether he'd shoot the paint right on top of it ... We'll see. Good luck Morbid. You put a lot of quality work on it I hope you don't get disappointed. I also wonder what sort of 'clear' he will use?

Phil, the sparkle is really overkill for my tastes, but that's just me. I do notice, however, that in the sunlight, while the sparkles don't stand out as much as they do indoors, regardless of indoor or outdoor light, it makes the colors very hard to notice. It doesn't look like a black to pewter fade to me, it just looks kinda gray.

Kaloyan, Glad to hear your understanding. He mentioned prepping the guitar before paint with some form of primer first. He didn't mention what, but it is what I would have done had I been left to my own devices. He said the overall process would take about 3 weeks, most of that time being taken by the curing process and the prep work. I'm not sure what kind of clearcoat he'll be using, but the sample he gave me has been shot with clear and it seems pretty beefy. I think things will come out very well. He also assured me that I'd be able to stop by the shop to take pictures of the progress to show you guys!

Any time Morbid. I am sure they'll put the grayish primer first and then the paint. And then the 'clear'. I am also glad that they told you a long period of time until you get it back because I really think that the 'clear' should be left alone for a long time to cure before the initial wet sand. I hope you'd be able to 'tape' the process. Everything sounds great so far. Good luck again!

Without/Very Little



I told Dan that I would like a slightly lighter gray color, so things standout a little more. My truck was parked near by, so I used it as a reference and held the paper up to it. It's ever so slightly lighter, but enough to make the difference I believe. He said we could use the actual code from my truck which is K11. Here is an outside picture of the paper on the hood of the (dirty)truck to give you guys the reference as well.

I'd definitely go without the sparkle (or with the very little sparkle), that looks almost like the color on my Godin (I mentioned this before), and it will fit the (whatever) grey (you use) much better.

The "fat" sparkle looks rad, but that would go much better for a unicolor instrument (could be one of those things, Dargie does to Balls *lol*). On a fade or washed over painting that might look extremely strange under stage lighting, as the big sparkle will invoke a lot of (colored) reflections, whereas the "greyish" part of the body painting (hahahaha, got strange connotations here...) will not. That might be some dissonant color perception then...I would not want to risk that, if the project was mine

And YES...please keep us in the loop for progress your JP makes throughout the painting process. I just love it

I'm sure it won't fly (I'll wait to see what BP says), but it amuses me so.
What if, when I see John next time, I have him sign it where his signature belongs, but where the old EB logo used to be, I just have him hand write "Ernie Ball Music Man", haha!

Are you seriously still thinking about the decal? You're putting so much individual effort in it, you should rather put your name on it The isolated signature of JP will clearly identify this instrument anyway, you don't need the company logo.

As I said, I'm sure it won't fly, it's more for the amusement thought than anything. While I think it would be cool, it's not necessary. Basically, I've just got nothing but time on my hands now while waiting for the guitar to be painted, so other ideas are occurring to me, and this just happened to be an amusing one.

I don't think BP will be aggravated, I think he may find it amusing also. And if he shoots it down I won't be heartbroken. As I said, I thought it was a funny idea, but I'm not even sure it's the route I would want to go, even with permission.

And as far as my name on the instrument, I'm going to take the backplate to an engraver when everything is done

The part list consists of; 3 Knob Grips, Whammy Bar, Piezo Backplate, Tremelo Claw, Springs & Screws, Neckplate Screws, 14 Backplate Screws, Volume Pot, Push Bull Tone Pot and a Wiring Diagram.

The parts should ship out to me next week.

I also just left a voicemail for Dan informing him that I have decided on the final decisions for the paintjob and am ready to drop the guitar off to him whenever he's ready. All in all, if things go as planned I believe the guitar should be done a little before Christmas!
