MM JP6 neck Vs Ibanez jem neck

Hey everyone,

I've been lurking around the forum for the last few weeks or so and finally decided to register!

I was wondering if you guys could help me out with a question I have...

I have been an Ibanez player for the last 6 years, starting with a JS1000 (Satriani Model) and then moving on to a Jem7V. I found that I can play more comfortably on the Jem's thin wizard neck as opposed to the JS1000's fender like neck.

My dilema is I really want a JP6, but there is no way I can try one out for myself as I cant find anywhere here in Ireland that stocks them...

Could you guys give me a comparision on how the JP neck is different to the Jem neck before I make the plunge? (Is it more or less the same/thinner/thicker etc..)

Any info no matter how small is much appreciated!

The JP6 neck is a shallow c. Pretty small all the way around. Much thinner than the JEM neck, but still round. So, not thin, flat, and wide like most Ibby necks. More like a smaller Satriani neck.

You can't beat ANY Music Man neck... their thickest neck still feels small and comfy... they just simply make the best feeling necks anywhere IMO.

The JEM neck would probably feel like a 2x4 to someone used to the JP6.

Hmm, wouldn't liken a JP6 neck with a JS - I have both (JP6, BFR JP6 and JS1) and they're very different.

For me the JP is a much flatter D shape - yup, wide, thin & fairly flat.

Norm profiled a JP7, which (whilst not a JP6) shows the general profile of the JP's :

Hi Dave

Nice to see another irish man on the board. I think that makes 4 or 5 now maybe more. I am new enough myself.

I think X-music in Dublin might have a JP6 ring em and find out as their website isnt up to date . I hear they have a nice selection of balls.I ahvent been up but i may take a trip up one of these days.

The neck is quite thin but i dont think its wizard IIthin. Its a great neck very comfortable and very fast. Music man are known for the great feel of all their necks.

Welcome to the forum Dave,its great to see more Irish people joining here and getting interested in musicman guitars.
Where about are you living in ireland?As Rob said already above the new music retailer in dublin 'Xmusic' do have a good stock of EBMM guitars so ring them like rob said and see if they have one in stock for you to try out.

If your JEM is relatively new (last 5 years or so) then the JP neck will feel completely different, though the thickness is probably close. I love the feel of the JP6 in comparison to any Ibby. I always feel like I'm going to break those Wizard necks...

The Wizard neck is much flatter than the JP6 neck, but the JP6 neck is more narrow. As far as how thick (fretboard to back of the neck) the Wizard feels thinner, but in reality the two are probably rather close. The flatness is more apparent if you compare the Universe or RG1527 and JP7.

I'm not sure what the JP neck is based from, but I do know it feels very different from the newer JEM necks.

What I CAN tell you is the neck profile/width/girth is what JP wanted when they designed the JP guitar. If that's like a "Viper" neck, then I guess you may be right.

I have an 87 Jem and it feels so completely different than the JP. I have a JS6 and the neck is great on it too.

I don't know what the recent Jems feel like, but evidently they've gotten much thinner than the old days.

Maybe the BFR is more round than the regular JP6 then? My BFR JP is not flat at all to me... lol Maybe it's just how we think of things descriptively being different. I played a JS not too long ago and I would have described it as in between JEM and BFR JP6...

Now, a neck I played the other day that felt EXACTLY like my guitar... The Daisy Rock Stardust Elite Classic... Yes... that. LOL It didn't play too bad action wise either... lol But the carve on the back was virtually identical to the BFR JP6. I was impressed by those little things. lol But, it told me that Music Mans are guitar perfect for girls because they work with all size hands. Maybe a few sparkly pink and purple color offerings? LOL

Oh, the JP neck isn't really based on the Viper neck. The Ibanez JPM models were at first the Viper neck, and then I think they shaved it down (as the camo JPM P4 I had had a much better neck than the primary colors P1 I have).

The MM JP neck may have used that as a starting point, but they made a much smaller neck overall. To me, the JP6 I played several years ago had a flatter neck than the BFR I have does. But, who knows what I was comparing it to then, and what I was used to then. They are likely identical I'm guessing.

Mate - I used to have a Jem77BFP, and I got to be honest.....my Petrucci (and every other MMan I have had) is just miles in front quality-wise.

The Petrucci is the best guitar I've ever had. It ain't just the neck - but the entire feel of the Petrucci body.....you'll never want another guitar - and you won't miss your Jem...
