I have been looking around for a hardtail Axis SS and have a question. Is there
any difference between a hardtail Axis and an Axis SS other than the tone knob and the 5-way switch? Also, are the neckplates still recessed?

The neck plates are not recessed on either my ASS or Axis.

keep in mind that you are talking about four pieces of wood two pots one switch a trem along with springs two pickups and some wire.....BP
You probably already figured this out...but another difference is that the EVH/Axis hardtail is no longer made. In fact, I'm not sure if there was an "Axis" hardtail -- but there definitely was an EVH hardtail. I'm sure somebody here will correct me on this if I'm wrong.
In any case, my point is that an EVH/Axis hardtail will be hard to find. I don't think many were made and used copies are picked-up rather quickly. On the other hand, the Axis Super Sport is pretty easy to find -- custom order one new, buy new in-stock, or buy used. Lots of choices there. With the hardtail Axis/EVH, you'll have to find one and then decide if you like the color/top/condition...

There definitely was an Axis hardtail, see my signature. They are tough to come by and they have a slightly different bite than the SS. I greatly prefer the Axis hardtail bite ove the Axis SS bite. I sold all my super sports after getting my other hardtail.
The SS is an awesome guitar, but positions 2 and 4 just aren't what I need and I prefer the toggle anyway. The Axis hardtail only came in three colors, purple, amber and red.

I have my eye on an ASS and a hardtail Axis, both are used. The ASS is in better condition, but I like the looks of the Axis. Hmmm...

Maybe you should try some of the recent production you could be surprised
25th came to minde but not only the Albert Lee is also an amazing guitar never say never
That being said and to go back to the topic, I own ASS MM90 ASS HH and EVH Hardtail avec the 3 are diffrent beast.
The EVH is by far the more resonant but it also by far the oldest one. I love the ASS for it's versality and the ASSMM90 for it's unique sound.

If it was me I wouldn't get a hardtail supersport. I would get a trem model and just tighten springs. I don't notice much difference. I prefer my Gold Trem supersport over my blue hardtail.
Thanks for all of the feedback. I your guys' passion and knowledge. I am looking at two particular guitars that I have found. I have owned two Silhouette Specials in the past that I never should have parted with and an Axis that I loved except for the Floyd-I could never get my right hand comfortable. So, I am pretty sure that I want an Axis or an ASS.
Does anyone know about the recessed neckplate. I am pretty sure that my Silhouettes had one, but I don't think that the Axis that I owned did. I really like that.
Hey man,
Where is the Axis hardtail you are checking out? If you pass it up, please pass along the link to it. It depends on the color though on whether I'd pursue it. Thanks

Will do. No problem.
BP has posted that the reason they discontinued the recessed plate was that people would typically overtighten the screws and crack the finish.
