Hey Everybody,
Don Smith is a great guy that was the recording engineer on Keith Richards X-Pensive Whinos Main Offender album, and I also had the priveledge of seeing him at work on The Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge recording sessions. These were great times in my life, and part of the reason I was there was to work on some of Keith's guitars and deliver some new ones.
All the pieces of the puzzle regarding the serial number on the neck plate indicate this is one of the guitars we made for Keith and he gave to Don. THE CORRECT SERIAL NUMBER FOR THE NECK PLATE IS 92298.
HOWEVER, the serial number on the neck does not have anything to do with EVH. Perhaps Don misunderstood me in the conversation we had, as I told him that the serial numbers beginning with 8 in our computer files indicate this number as an EVH guitar because the EVH series all begin with a number 8.
The first few years of EB/MM guitar production, we put the serial number on the back of the headstock, with the first 2 digits indicating the year of manufacture. So this neck is a 1988 neck (which just happens to have the same serial number as some EVH out there) and the body is a 1992 as indicated by the number on the neck plate. Ironically, the numbers 92 in the neck plate serial number DO NOT themselves indicate this as a 1992, as we discontinued this scheme, but coincidentally it is a '92.
We made numerous Silhouettes for Keith and Ron Wood back in those days, and my guess is that the neck was perhaps swapped with the neck on another guitar. Maybe Keith loved this neck, but it was on a white body or...? But that is only a guess.
In any case, the pedigree of this guitar seems to be that it was one of Keith's personal guitars, and was signed by him and given to Don.
Cheers, Dudley
