Introduction and couple questions on the JPM6

Hi everyone,

I'm new around here My name's David as you can tell and I've been playing for around 13 years or so.

I'm about to buy a JPM6 model and I've a couple questions for you all EBMM gurus. First of all I was in the middle of deciding whether to get the piezo or not but the more I think the more I want it. I concur everyone thinks the piezo is real nice right? Has anyone tried it with an acoustic guitar amp? Those amps are night/day difference when acoustic guitars are used, they breathe life into every note.

Second, I've seen some JPM's on ebay where the bridge pickups have only screws for each string, not the solid bar the D-Sonic or Crunch Lab have. Is that alright? Which pickup is that one, Steve's Special?

Finally, does it sound like a dream to get a loaded JPM in great shape for $1500? There's one in ebay right now going for $1250 fully loaded but just 1 feedback on the seller so that scares me

Hi David! Welcome to the forums.

I don't feel like going in depth, so I'll just say 'get the piezo'. Even through normal amps, it sounds really good, and as you mentioned, through a PA or acoustic amp, it's unreal!

The pickups you mentioned are, yes, Steve's Specials. Except they're a modified EBMM-only Dimarzio version that I think has more mids than the normal one, perhaps higher output or something. You could only get them by getting an EBMM JP6/7, that's all I know.

Honestly, depending on colour and condition, 1500 is very possible. I saw a Mystic Dream JP6 for 1500, fully loaded get sold about 2 years ago and to this day, wish I had the money. It's all a matter of waiting. About the eBay dude; send him some emails and ask a lot of questions. You can tell if he's the real deal or not just by how he handles your inquiries. Remember, everyone had to start somewhere on eBay

I use a Trace Elliot acoustic amp for my piezo... really brings it to life. Having said that, when I was looking for my new amp (and Egnater Mod 50), I played the piezo through a clean module. The guys who make the amp were in the other room and came rushing in cuz they thought I was playing a classical guitar. I still prefer an acoustic amp though.

The early JP's came with a modified Steve's Special in the Bridge position created specifically for the JP. Around the time of Octavarium, John switched to the D-sonic and then to the Crunch Lab at the tail end of recording Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

Welcome. Trust me, you'll want a fully loaded JP. It is a much more versatile instrument with the piezo, and looks better with the matching headstock and inlays. I think your price ballpark is definitely possible, you just have to find the right guitar. As for pickups, as you see above there are 3 variations, and some players like some combos better than others. In any case, make sure to get a loaded JP when you buy, otherwise you'll regret not doing do later!

well i didnt get a loaded jp . and i love mine. but to be honest the only reason i didnt get one was A) because there wasnt one with the options available that i wanted in the country . B) im getting the piezo when i buy my silo special early next year

Guess I'll have to wait until the "right" JPM appears, fully loaded of course . After that I'll happily join the club... my 13 year old lowbie Yamaha is on its third fret set, so it's time for a retirement.

Can a JP be had with a Piezo but not the shield? Would the headstock then just be black? (I prefer less "stuff" on the fingerboard.....even though my initials actually are JP too).

The standard JP's can be configured with piezo but no shields. Only the BFR JP's come with black headstocks, save for the Dargie's. The standard JP's will either have a natty headstock or matching... again the choice is yours when you order it from your dealer.

A fully loaded JP6 is great, but don't discount a JP6 without piezo. I think they sound warmer and have a fuller tone than the piezo-equipped ones. Both are great, however.
