Original Morse vs. Y2D: sonic differences?

Hi EBMM experts,

Proud owner of a 1991 Morse model here and I am thinking about adding a 2nd Morse to my stable. Morses are hard to find where I live so I was wondering about some opinions from owners.

I think I heard Morse himself say something about a "sightly more mainstream" sound in the Y2D.

I mean, apart from the missing 4th pickup, does it sound different from the 1st version? And in which way? Does the maple top add more sparkle or even a wider frequency range overall? The original Morse is a pretty mid-heavy guitar to begin with - at least my own guitar is.

Are the pickups still the same like on the old version?

Aaah, questions, lots of questions.....

Pete Dubaldo told me the Y2D is slightly brighter and maybe a bit more aggressive, but you can still clean it up by toning down the volume and tone knobs.

I'll just have to wait and see for myself. Hopefully this week I get it!

To be honest: I never played a Y2D, but this question is rather often asked here.

Some say the Y2D is a bit brighter, some say it doesn´t make a difference.

The Y2D PUPs are hotter so that Mr. Morse is able to have them in a lower position to get the same output.

The neck is a bit thinner (compared to your 91-model), as it is on the newer Standard Morse models. This change came out with the introduction of the Y2D.

the y2d i used to have seemed to be brighter in some ways compared too my original steve morse model.

he plays a standard model at about the 2:55 mark, and also at 4:10 for a good comparison.

Just to clarify, both the bridge DP200 and neck DP205 humbuckers are used in the original and y2d models (same 'buckers in both guitars). The only different pickup in the y2d is the bridge single coil, which is proprietary to EBMM and not available off the shelf. The difference you hear in sound is due to the body/top.

Thanks to all of you. The video of Morse playing his old No.1, the Y2D prototype and the FR-equipped standard makes the different sounds pretty obvious. Not sure if I prefer the Y2Ds sound though.

Guess I have to check one out in person, as if I didn´t know before ......

I own both and have to disagree the Y2D is brighter sounding well at least regards mine anyway. If anything my Y2D has bags more midrange than my standard. Thats maybe down to the hardtail on the Y2D and the Floyd on the Std
The Y2D definetely sounds fuller though on the same settings with more sustain and the Std sounds a bit more "hollow" for lack of a better description.
mine are quite different sounding to each other and I love the difference.
