I like the local shops too, I take my MM's to a shop that doesn't even sell MM's. They are always excited to see them and like working on them. I like GC's deals though, I've gotten lots of stuff thrown in at GC.

You guys are really lucky people

Things are different over here. I loved my local shops through all the years, though I never received a goody...only stupid answers to very little questions

"No, we don't make the setup of your guitar, unless you bought it from us. And we don't care if you are willing to pay for it...we don't earn anything out of it."

"The PU is double the price, because the distributor is ripping us off"

"No, we don't put expensive guitars on display any more....nobody wants them. Okay, the China rubbish doesn't sell either, but we can put 30 guitars on the shelves, instead of ten"

    etc......

So, I watched them all come and go for the last 30 years, always trying to become a customer.......since Y2D I buy online

Sorry to hear about that e.mate-
There's a shop that came to town about 3 years ago that i refuse to support because when i walk in i'm greeted with this
"No cell phones, and don't play without asking"
they do carry EB strings so in a pinch (and if there is no other option) i'll stop in and grab strings but as far as the big stuff i'll buy from my go to shop.

Well, if you're ever in San Diego, We'll let you play any damn thing you can see. We don't care if you aren't gonna buy it, cause we understand that sometimes it's just COOL to play some of the really high end stuff. That's why we consign stuff like the Johnson Anubis guitar we have hanging out right now. I understand it probably won't sell, but it just looks damn cool, and people like to see weird stuff like that.

As musician's, we should all remain in a community sort of vibe, not dollars and cents like GC does. It's all about the craft and the instruments. All of us LOVE cool looking guitars and oddities, so why not have some just to satisfy the curiosity of customers, even if they don't buy it? That's how we roll. The Economy can F%&$ itself, we're here to make a connection with people who share our interests, and maybe a little profit on the side if we're lucky.

I do not even stop into a GC or Sam Ash though both are 5 minuetes from my house unless I need strings in a pinch. My friend Mikes store Maggio Music on 84th and 18th ave in Bklyn has been in buisness over 80 years and is the only place I go.

Now being not only does he do all my work but is a good friend is as good as it can possibly get. There is nothing like the atmosphere of going to the store and hanging out for the day and talking shop with everyone. The big chain stores are just cold and the workers are either clueless or trying to sell you everything they can. If I do stop in one the minute I am approached I make it clear if I need help I will ask. I used to have another good friend that had a small store but they put up a Sam Ash ten blocks from him and put him out of business.

You are never going to get the selection or variety that the chains offer but you know your gear is getting treated like it was there own. So I totally agree more players should support the small stores as in the long run you will be the one that benefits.
