Unfinished neck aging

Hi guys. I'm looking for a little advice here...
I had my Axis for years before I realized I needed to take care of the unfinished neck. I now know how to care for it, however there are the effects of the years of neglect showing. I know the “relic” and “worn” look is desirable for some, but I’m concerned there may be adverse effects beyond the cosmetic. Here’s my questions for anyone who may have some experience with this:
1. Is there any way to remove or lessen the “grayish” discoloration on the neck and the fretboard?
2. Has permanent damage been done to the neck? (no signs of warpage or anything like that)
3. Even though it is being taken care of now, will it continue to deteriorate due to prior carelessness?

Someone will come in with the "care of the unfinished neck" youtube link. Sorry, I just got home from work, a little tired... ^^;;

But aside from structural damage of the wood, all cosmetic and general undesireable "ugliness" can be removed by running through some 600-800 grit, with a second run of 1000 grit, some murphy oil soap, and casey gunstock wax blend. Good as new!

I watched the video. What I don't understand is why isn't a new coat of tru-oil applied after the sanding?

Thanks... yeah, I've done that already.
Maybe I was a little to cautious with the sandpaper and just didn't sand enough. I still have some discoloration.
Also, the intro to the video says "not recommended...for maple fingerboards"... so, what do you do for a maple fingerboard?
