Unhappy It's been an EXTREMELY rough winter for my Petrucci

    Hi all!

I have some unfortunate news, just wondering if anyone has had similar issues.

The weather outside has been cold... VERY cold... 22 degrees, but it came up to 57 today... My Petrucci didn't like that at all...

There is now a thin layer about 2mm thick completely surrounding the bridge, where the finish has obviously lifted from the body.

But hey- that top sucks eh?

This was from the previous owner of the guitar.... It happened after a vicious winter season as well... pretty brutal....

Well, although it's got some battle scars now, I will never stop loving it to absolute death!

EDIT: Forgot this one. Here the finish has actually cracked completely off, and the wood is exposed here.

I've got some of that peeling all around the tuning pegs on my LP. Just adds character!

That is such a shame! Oh well, I guess Mother Nature gives on one hand (that awesome top), and yet can take with the other!

Wow...never had that happen...we've dealing with some extreme cold weather here and the humidity in our house dropped to below 30 from around 40 over the weekend, and the truss rod adjustments have been driving me crazy...but nothing like that.

Did you have the guitar in a basement on a guitar stand? It is a shame but a drastic change in weather like the one you have stated can cause that to ant ax, especially if the guitar is not in it's case. You are going from below freezing to almost 60 degrees. I was just reading on another forum about guys giving there guitars a relic -checkered look to the finish, by of all things putting their guitar bodies in the freezer and then exposing them to heat right away, causing the clear coat to checker. I feel for you but at least you have the right frame of mind=play the sh!t out of it.

I'd at least consider this. I live in Rochester NY where the weather changes a lot and gets really cold in the winter. Never seen that happen on any of my guitars.

Well, it was in a stand in my house. My house stays heated all day/night though. Pretty strange. I'll probably shoot MM an email at some point...

I've never seen that before. I'd definitely call EBMM CS. There may or may not be something they can do for you.

Unfortunately, there's likely nothing you can do to fix it, save a complete refinish and that would be hell. There IS a way to prevent it, though. Keep your home a steady temperature between Summer and Winter (I keep my house at 70 F year round). And the most important part is keep the air moist with a humidifier.

I have a whole house humidifier system as well as a room humidifier for my guitar room. I keep the humidity around 45% in the guitar room and 30% or higher in the rest of the house. You just want to make sure you're not fogging up your windows.

Wow, yeah, I would definitely give EBMM a call. I figured it must have been in a basement or something, not a heated house. I've kept guitars on hangers year round in my house and the worst I've seen is some peeling around the tuning pegs on my LP, and my Dad has like 50 guitars out at all times and I've never seen anything like that on his guitars. Good luck with this man.

the only time i've seen that happen to guitars was on a few Nitro sprayed guitars some local bands took on the road in the Canadian winter... they were low funded and had a U-Haul trailer for their gear... somewhere from Montreal to Toronto their guitarists axes had the finnishes start to crack... i figured it was from being freezing cold and then taking them into warm motels and bars...
