JPXI - JP12 body materials

This is a discussion on JPXI - JP12 body materials within the Music Man Guitars forums, part of the Gear Talk category; I'm curious as to what difference having a basswood with maple top and mahogany tone block has on the JPX12 ...

    JPXI - JP12 body materials

I'm curious as to what difference having a basswood with maple top and mahogany tone block has on the JPX12 as opposed to the alder with maple top and mahogany tone block on the JPXI?

What would be the differences in tone between the two. As I say; I'm just curious

I would imagine it would have an almost brighter, crunchier sound. Not unlike the JP6.

Someone talked about this already I can't quote exactly what was said but, I remember them saying he's gone essentially, full circle because of the materials used in the JP6. How nice it must be to be John Petrucci. The man knows what he wants and he gets what he wants! Oh to be a fly on the wall during one of those meetings. It would be super awesome to see a behind the scenes of what goes into the R&D of making his signature guitar and what goes on through his mind. I'd pay for that. I seriously can't wait to see what the great folks at EBMM have up their sleeves. It seriously keeps me up at night! Haha

Alder is brighter than basswood. Basswood is more middy than alder. Honestly with the tone block I doubt you would notice much difference, but the alder would certainly add more brightness than basswood.

Basswood is also lighter and more resonant. Satch's tone is all based around his basswood guitars, which might give you an idea of what an all basswood body guitar would sound like. Very middy and airy, well articulated tone. I'm glad to see the basswood back, because I love the standard JP's and I can't wait to try the jp12.

What people don't know, that the JP12, is VERY similar (albeit some differences, namely the neck) to the BFR Prototype JP used on the SCORE dvd that many people have been jonesing for!

What is the neck made of? It would be interesting if it is a mahogany neck on a basswood mahogany maple body cocktail.

Hmm I always thought the SCORE guitar was basically a 20th anniversary (woods and pickups) with a JP body shape and neck.

Also, I heard or read somewhere that the JP12 has a slightly more scooped sound than the JP11. It might have been internet rumours, though. I personally always find descriptions of the kind of more bass, more scooped, brighter etc. a little oversimplifying, it's gotta be more complex than that or else a simple knob turn on the amp would make all guitars sound the same. A frequency response graphic would be more representative.

Yes I doubt it can be as simple as described... more scooped, brighter etc... but its a starting point for me to help understand what might be the differences between the two guitars.

My problem is, if it is a problem, is that I have a JPXI and it now is my go to guitar for almost everything that 'I' need. I need a backup guitar and I was thinking a second JPXI and then came along the 12 and I thought what would be the tonal differences?
