There's just something about that solo that gives me the intense shivers up and down my spine every time I hear it. It's not like it's Petrucci's first uber-melodic solo or anything, but it seems like he stepped it up a notch for this one. It's epic, apocalyptic, and just this solo by itself could be the soundtrack to some epic movie!

gives me shivers too. One of my favorite solos no question. These guys are incredible musicians that sound the same if not better live than on record. Rare to see these days. wasn't too crazy about the keyboard riffing/improv just as the solo was starting...Rudess is talented beyond belief but I could without the Mario Brothers sound effects in these songs; just sayin

Above and beyond the wonderful solo itself, I can't get over how thick and rich his neck pickup tone is. It probably has to do with the ridiculously thick picks he's now using (2.1mm thick!) but, then again, a good pickup is a good pickup!

Seen this in Düsseldorf on 02.02. Amazing, cutting and clear, yet full and singing, not piercing. Great show overall!

Glad you guys like it as much as I do. I'm agreeing with Dan that his neck pickup sounds ridiculously think yet sparkly, like this guitar is made for this particular solo.. I think it's more the combination of guitar and amp, don't forget Petrucci is the master of tone

You make a good point there, Petrucci is the master of tone. Hell, he even managed to get a decent tone out of Dual Rectifiers (don't hate me for that comment, I know they're very solidly built and purposeful amplifiers, they're just not for me), but I was very happy when I watched the making of Systematic Chaos video to see that he had retuned to the Mark series amps. There's just something so fluid and clean about their lead tone...totally devoid of fizziness.
