Neck shapes

I see that a lot of you guys have more than one MM guitar and various models too, so my question to you is:

Are there any major differences in neck shape and feel between, let's say, an Axis neck and an Axis super sport model or a Sihlouette Special guitar?


I know that JPetrucci has a totaly different neck then other models but other than that it seem to me they might be pretty much the same, or am I wrong on this one?!?!?!

I had a Silhouette special a while ago and it had a nice round neck that just fits into your hand nicely, but then I tried an Axis sport and that one had a completely different feel to it altogether.
The only thing in common would be the width.These necks are pretty narrow.

I believe there are some big differences to me. I haven't played all the models (AL being the only one...) and they all feel different to me. I don't know all the technical mumbo jumbo or guitar speak on how to describe them....I just buy JP's cause they work for me.

I haven't played evey EB MM model but from the ones I have, Silhouette, JPM, Axis, & Sub1 I can say the Axis had the thickest neck & most comfortable to me.

For speed & soloing the JPM had the thinnest, widest, & fastest neck. I found the Axis to have a more C shape & the Petrucci to have a more ( shape. The Silhouette & Sub 1 felt more like the Petrucci neck but thicker to me. I believe the Sil, Axis, & Sub 1 have a narrower neck than the JPM.

If I could pick the perfect guitar it would be a Petrucci body w. an Axis neck.

I just calculated that the Silo is 20.7mm at the 1st and around 23mm thick at the 12th fret.
I have to say that 21mm at 1st fret to me is not enough. I need to have something to grip for when bending.
My strat, from all the refretting , came down to 20mm at the 1st fret and I messed up my left hand real good playing on such a thin neck.
I think that guitar manufacturers should wrrite out these details because it's important to know what you r buying, especially if you cant try it in your local store, right?
The current custom tele I had built has 22,2mm at the 1st fret and the 23,5 at the 12th.Nut width is somewhere above 43mm.

Of the ones I've tried:

Luke, pronounced V effect and quite narrow. Shouldn't be comfortable but just is

Axis: Thick and chunky with a deep C but offset so the lower strings have slightly more wood behind them then the upper. The most comfortable neck on the planet (so far as I've tried) and better than the Tylers I tried lately.

Axis SS: seemed more or less the same as the Axis to me (?)

Petrucci: More of an Ibanez type neck. Not as extreme as the Wizard or Jem necks, closer to the JS models...very nice but my hands don't fit them as well. If i ever need a 7 string again I'll buy one as the neck is far more comfortable than the Universe or 7 string RGs.

Sillouette: a nice, middle of the road neck. Somewhere between the Axis and Petrucci. Nothing to really stand out and nothing to complain about.

Must try and AL and SM one day but I've never seen either in the flesh.

I just played a mexican fat tele, you know the one with a widerange hummer in the neck pos?!?!
Well I dug the width and the chunkiness but I disfavored the large radius.

I recently tried an axis sport guitar with humbuckers, and (I have small hands, mind you) I felt that the neck whas quite thin and narrow behind the first few frets.Then I thought , since its an used instrument, somebody might have shaved it or something. But I doubt it....

When I say the Axis is chunky, remember I've just finished 11 years of playing Jems and Universes Heck, a bamboo cane would be chunky compared to those

OA, I have small hand also and I love the feel of the Axis Sports neck. I have 2 of them and I think it's the fact that they seem so suited for my smaller hadns that I love these instruments.

I doubt that anybodies messed with the neck, but you never know. Try doing this, if you have a digital camera, or borrow one. Shoot a few pictures of the neck and post them. Trust me you'll find out quick enough whether or not it's been messed with.

I'll never forget the day I played my long gone sillo....When I tried the neck I thought ....my god nothing ever felt so good as this neck!!!!

The only reason I sold it is because I hated the bridge HB sound.It was way too cold sounding and I didnt want to mess with the original parts so I sold it...but when I think back It had a great neck...maybe a bit small but very comfortable nevertheless!!!!


I have smaller hands, whatever even qualifyesas small hands but they sure as hell aint big and the left wrist/elbow/shoulder/back has been giving me issues 4 quite some time.


I tried out a lot of guitars since i figured my strat is no longer the thing for me so after realising theres either:used guitars that need more investing and new frigid ones I just started thinking:

why dont I sell everything and get a proper one!!?!?!
So my options came down to MM-locking tuners, P90's, hardtail, barewood finish, light weight

Adam, I'll do my best. I'll definitately have the info by Monday at the latest.

Well the Locking turners are standard. I have 1 hardtail and 1 with trem and I prefer the hardtail myself, but that's just a preference thing. The Natural finish ones are nice, I'm pretty sure theres one on EvilBay right now.

You can't go wrong with an EBMM Axis.

Guess what ,

I called up a friend of mine, I remembered that he got a Sillhouette HSH ...

I played it and I couldnt get my hands of it.

I am in DEEP TROUBLEEEEE!!!
I still think that the body of a silo is a bit too small, and that the pups could sound warmer, and I am not a humbucker type of guy, but when you keep the neck and put an axis SS body I bet its a winning combinnation.
This one was 21mm at 1st fret and little abouve 23mm at the 12th fret.
