Talk about the New Rosewood Axis...

Hi all!!

I'm a new Axis owner... Just about 3 days... I just got my new Rosewood Axis (not Super Sport or Sport) and finlish the setup by myself. I'm a PRS guitars player but this time, I'm really love this new born Rosewood Axis!! Small, Smooth and very lovely sound... really really Cool!! But now, I still want to change the pickups... I want more vintage sound more cream and smooth sound!! I was try to find some pickups I'm looking for but all model also can't put in with out mod... (you know Dimazio pickups wing is special). So, any people can give me some choose for the pickups change!?
P.S.: Sorry!! I still not yet make any pics for my new babe, I will post it next time.

Nothing complicated about the Dimarzios- every PU manufacturer has it's own colour codes, so any change outside of that is going to require a little bit of thought.

When you say you want them "smoother", is it just a matter of taking some of the high-end off the pickup? I find the Axis pickups well balanced and think they're probably not far off the mark there.

Rather than spend the cash on some new pickups or do a major re-wiring, why not try wiring in a resistor in series to the volume pot? The existing pot is 500k, so if you wire in another 500k resistor that will have the effect of lowering the overall resistance to 250k which will darken the sound a bit.

Try the PRS original "Dragon" pickups, not the new Dragon IIs. I think they will give you the tone you are looking for.

Virtual PAF's are a pretty good choice if you want that vintage strat like sound. They are cleaner and brighter than others I have heard. I have them in my Silhouette, but they are WAY too vintage for me. Awesome pickups, just not for me. I am looking for replacement pickups that are a bit hotter but also very versetile. I came up with PAF Pro in the Neck and Breed in bridge. But no one seems to be able to give ME comments or suggestions as to what I am looking for

And by "in series", you really meant "in parallel", right?

The two in series will yield 1 MegOhms. In parallel, it's going to be 250K.

By the way, TVK, welcome to the world of crackwood. I'm also mainly a PRS player with a brand new Axis SS RW!

Nick- take a 500k resistor, solder one end to the lug on the volume pot where the wire from the pickup selector comes in, and then solder the other end to ground. You'll roll the frequencies back a bit, taking off some of the highs.

Thank You for all guys!! I think I have a new idea to mod my Axis... A new 250K or 500K push/pull volume pot control. Just try it first before I change the Dimazio pickups.
But one more thing, anyone here also buy a new Axis Rosewood!?

The resistor'll do the same thing as the 250k pot (minus the push/pull which I'd guess you're wiring up for a split?) - why not wire that up first (you don't even really have to solder it; just hold it in place) before swapping the pot? Then you'll know whether or not you like the sound without having to do any major surgery on your new baby.

I will try your ways first... Anyway the neck pickup is very good and match my sound (So, I buy this guitar). You know, one more thing I take this baby because I'm crazy about the Rosewood neck magic... It really really... Fantasic!!

I've got a Rosewood Super Sport Hardtail-I've actually had it since late May. Not looking to change a thing yet. l've already ordered my 2nd EBMM guitar- a Steve Morse in Buttercream. I also have an old Sterling bass (neck date 7/8/93) and a bunch of other stuff, but I really haven't played anything but the Super Sport since I got it.
