I've been dying for a Stingray fretless lately, and then this unusual specimen shows up in GC's used inventory--looks to be a late 80's model, still with some pre-EB parts. It's a bit of a risk but it was a steal. The GC guy says the defret job was very good and obviously professionally done. The body looks a little rough but the bass is 30 years old, after all. I'll post again once I get it delivered, but in the meantime I'm pretty stoked.

You can thank me ! I hesitated. You win !

I also realized it's a steal, but have so many
basses ATM that my policy is to never jump
on anything, no matter how cool is the bass
and great is the deal. If something lingers,
then I might buy later. If I lose, I consider
myself to be learning discipline [ROTFL].

Soooo ! I am hugely happy to know where
it went. I did you a solid. You did me one,
almost all in the same moment, and we've
never even met. Do me another: Enjoy the
whoop ass out of it for us both !

Congrats and thanks 1000X :)

I will definitely enjoy that bass, assuming there's nothing horribly wrong with it. I've got GC's liberal return policy backing me up in that case. I'll post a review once I get it Friday and spend some time with it. Thanks!

Looks like it's back at GC.

Did you reject it ?

Should I buy it ?

Whazzup ?

Well, I won't get home for about a week, so I ordered the
thing ground shipped to the GC near home. Figger it will
hang around that store 4 or 5 days before I get home. If
it sucks, it doesn't leave the store. If not sucky, WHOOP !

Got anything to warn me about ?

LOL I sent you a private message about it, check your Notifications->Inbox. Short story is it's a great bass but smelled like cigarettes and I'm super sensitive to that and couldn't hack it. Be careful when you pick it up, the case is trashed also--you'll have to hold it closed. :)

Just read the PM, thanks much ! Bass is on its way to me.

This whole scenario is an outstanding instance of my own
quirky personal take on avoiding impulse purchases:

No matter how appealing the prospective purchase, I let
Fate play a hand. If it lingers long enuf, then maybe it's
"a sign" that I should proceed. Otherwise it's "meant for"
some other player.

In this instance, I waited to let Fate play out. I was happy
it actually went to a brother. Then you bounced it back to
me. The system worked !

I'd always wanted to try a maple FB FL. But unfortunately
that is mainly limited to Overpriced Fenders [pardon that
redundant language]. I have a maple FB fretted neck lying
around from my "Winter Sterling" ... that wears a graphite
neck ... but I remained hesitant to defret the original neck.

Anywho, thanks for checking out the GC bass for us ... and
for adjusting it. Can I assume that "adjusting" means that
the truss rod is working well ?

And I'll be careful not to dump it out of the case ;-)

As you've probably found, the truss rod is working fine. I'd still own that thing if it wasn't so smelly. I wound up with a fretless sterling from 2000, beautiful sounding with a nice birdseye neck. I've wanted one of those for 20 years, and this one is amazing, so as you say fate played out for the benefit of us both.
