Ok so to cut a long story short five years ago I did a very bad job of refinishing this bass. It wasn’t too bad a job, the concept was Daphne Blue over sunburst with the intention of after years of playing the sunburst would eventually start showing through (hate faked relic finishes, earn your stripes!)
Five years later the Acrilic paint I used, over the stock polyurethane finish isn’t creating the modern/classic effect I had in mind... so time to do it properly.

I have successfully refinished a few guitars and basses with nitrocellulose now so fear not I’ve got the hang of it now.
Finished photos to follow.
Got a lot of history with this bass, it’s still my go to #1.

Can I buy back my sunburst ray.

Got a Blue one on order but not selling... :p
it’s been a few years now, 2009/10?
Feels like I’ve deleted history but looking at it like something new out of something old and keep putting the miles on it !

It looks great, you have the touch.

Thank you. I’ve done all the heavy lifting, body is all prepped now, sanding sealer is on.
Primer. Colour. Lacquer then build it back up and put more miles on it.
I’ve been debating doing it since the start of the year but been a bit reluctant for sentimental reasons but it had to be done.
Examples of other nitrocellulose refinishing jobs I’ve done are on my Facebook bass page (link in signature if you need it or want to check them out)

I love nitro finishes and I love blue guitars...add some actual play wear and I'm 100% sold. How did you do the original finish stripping? You've got me thinking about this for my #1 SR5.

I had to remove the acrylic paint with chemicals/ paint stripper, then remove the original stock finish from underneath with heat. Heat gun.
(Loads of photos of past projects at different stages on my bass page. Link in sig if you’re interested in full process)

Today. Nothing exciting but primer is on and looking pretty flawless so definitely happy with it. Blue then lacquer next

Nothing too exciting to report apart from a bad camera phone picture of wet paint, but SunBlue is once again Daphne Blue.
Saturday is lacquer day then build it back up.
Watch this space

Not the best of photos, it’s lacquered (day earlier than planned) but it appears I have a new problem. I brought a new pick guard in black to replace the old tired one and just found a Tort one in my parts stash !
Black or Tort ?!!?!? :confused::confused:

Been a long day but it’s finally finished, strung up and ready to go.
I voted Tort myself but completely forgot about the control plate, the tort clashed with the black so black guard it is.
I’ll put some better pictures up soon. It’s gone dark on me and it’s tea time :p
Plus I’m out of attachment space so...
anyways I’m very happy with the finished results so all good !;)
