Assuming the (SR4) has an alnico p,up , then why does it sound growly , with mids and a bit toppy , compared to the sterling sub alnico which is warm , and full sounding ? Shouldnt they sound similar...

Why not ! You probably wouldnt get much for it if you tried to sell , and just looking at it wont make it earn its keep . You can always put a different neck on it if you stuff it up .
