At the beginning of the year, I promised Dude I'd buy a Bongo from him this year if he stays sober. So, while shopping for Straplocks (went with schallers by the way - and Wonderdog I still think you're crazy for even suggesting I take a drill  to my baby);) , I decided to pick up my first Bongo and experience this buzz you all seem to be highly effected with.

Now, and I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I do love my Stingray. More so than any of my classic Fenders. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm not feeling the Bongo love. The look, the feel, it just wasn't there. And then I picked up a Sterling. Oh my, now that's more like it. Classic lines. Thin neck. I'm diggin this bass.

So my real question is, can you achieve the same tones with a 2H Sterling as with a Bongo. Is it the dual hum's that give you that sound, or is it the design (mass) of the body, coupled with the neck? And then there's the Sterling where the second p/u is a single coil. What the heck is that? And how does the sound compare with 2H?

Okay, enough with the questions. I do love wandering around GC and could ask a lot more questions, but I'll leave those for later........

The Bongo has different pickups and preamp than the Sterling. I don't currently have a Bongo but I've owned several. If I had to choose between an HH Bongo or an HH Sterling I'd go for the Bongo.

If you had tried the HH Stingray too that would be choice #1 for me.

If you have had both in your hands and you prefer the Sterling, get the Sterling. I don't think Dude would be hurt as long as you were ordering a MM from him.

Think of your bass like someone you are going to spend the rest of your life with. Why go for someone you gotta talk yourself into hanging out with?

Do you think I should explain this analogy between picking a bass and marriage to my wife?

im sure theyd sound different. totally different preamp, obviously different body, wood etc. i dunno what magnets each bass' PUPs have but thats also gonna be a factor.

the Bongo blows my ass away but its not for me either.

im a Sterling guy but recently got an HH SR4 b/c id never heard anything that sounded soooooooo good to me.

Try 'em out. yu dont HAVE TO get a Bongo, but u do have to get an MM :) thank God (and Dudley and BP) that we have sooo many options w/ the EBMM's (not just the 2 same basses renamed and recycled ;))

T-bone, a promise is a promise, so you'll get yerself a Bongo, you hear:cool:

Serious, if you like the Sterling better, get the Sterling. I haven't yet seen a HH or HS Sterling or SR, but since they're more or less exactly the same as before but with a second pick up, you get Sterling or SR tone and then some.

Arin, since dual PU SR/Sterlings are not coming here for some months, would you mind doing some recordings comparing "old" Sterling tone to dual PU? If you find the time some day. Pretty please?
