a change to my Bongo 5

I decided to try a change of strings to allow me to tune it E A D G C and so far I'm quite pleased with it.

I've always felt that the low notes were wasted for the sort of music I play (accompanying an acoustic guitarist) and with more and more opportunity to play little runs and solos I felt that it would be more useful this way, just have to get used to it and see if it's an improvement.

As the 5 has always seemed darker in tone to the 4 I'll make the next set some stainless steels to see if I can tweak the tone slightly closer, though it's sounding very nice as it is.

I currently have my HHP bongo 5 set up EADGC with TI Flats. It works really well. I haven't had any problems with intonation with the compensated nut, either. I used them with a BassMute and a pick and got some great tones out of the Bongo. The high mid knob can really sweeten up the C string.

Of course, I'm probably going to replace them with D'Addario Chromes tuned BEADG today. Part of the reason I went to the EADGC tuning was that I wanted to use TI Flats, but I've never liked their B string. I don't have the same problem with Chromes.

I think you'll like the setup, though. The Bongo neck works well with that tuning. Even using the bass for a 3+ hour gig, I never had and hand fatigue from reaching across to the low E.

I'm considering adding a Bass Extender to give me the option of the low D (as it seemed to be the only note I ever used regularly) so I'll have the best of all worlds

I use a hipshot on my 4 string and really like the fact that I've got that D there if I need it (which I do!).
