All this talk of Sterlings and SR5's (tone)

I'm waffling again. I am getting a green bass, and have already told Jack that it will be an SR5 HH. However, Mr. Tom Karter has me wondering about my decision, because in hindsight, he's right about me not keeping fivers for long.

If memory serves, the HH Sterlings and HH SR5's that I've played have very comparable tones. Would you folks agree? Aren't the pickups and preamps quite similar?

I adore the way both basses play, but I am quite the four-string guy.

Help me!

I also think you should get the green SR5 HH. I am liking the heck out of the Bongo that used to be yours.

That will work out really good too if I can't afford to order one for meself within the order window of getting a green one.

Yes, comparable tones. The sr5 will have a little more low end, whereas the sterling will have a bit more middy growl. This is most likely due to the difference in mass of the two basses.

Seeing as how you're the 4 string guy, i'd say go Sterling. Why exactly are you considering the 5 string? Personally, if I can get one of these, it'll be a HSC SR5 because my HH SR5 comes in next month. (Right Steve??? ) Although if you think you play more fluently on a 4 banger with a tiny neck, the Sterling it is.

All the cool kids have low B's. Just think about that.

Regarding the tone, I believe the SR5 & Sterling share the same p/u and switching options - overall mass and "low B" should be all that separates the two tonally...

Thanks guys - I've no experience with an SR5 being a pure 4-banger kind of guy. Is it the pick-up and switching options that's shared between them?
