am I reading wrong?

I have read in the Faq that virtually all string height adjustments can be made with the truss rod? Is that how you guys setup?

I would think once the proper relief is in the neck it would be wise to move the bridge saddles up or down to acheive the desired results.

I also have a great setup on the bass right from EB. I plan on changing to flats pretty soon and figure there will be a need for a height adjustment.

The way I see it (in short) is to get the neck straight. Adjust saddles. If there's fret buzz at the first few frets, add slight relief. Recheck saddles and recheck relief.

So Rod, do you use the trussrod to get the neck set to about a business cards width at the 12th fret, or do you set it differently? I am currently trying to tweak the setup on my SR5. It's not quite perfect, but I hope to get it there soon. I am basically looking to get a low action setting, but obviously no buzz.

If you are asking me no I don't see it as a reward. I only meant if Rod would like to add the information on my SR5 to his database I would be happy to send it to him.

On reading the faq I read a much better setup rule down the page than at the top.

I do believe the first one that says virtually all string heights can be set is misleading. The article at the bottom is very descriptive and well written.

nismaniac.....the link midopa posted....that's how I go about it. Everybody has different opinions on the subject but that's the one I work on.

After setting up that way, I'm usually interested in the end result measurements. On the 94 'Ray, relief at the 5th or 6th fret (while depressing the E string at the 1st and 12th fret) ends up about cigarette paper thickness...hardly visible. Although I do string height at the 17th fret, after the whole Bass is set up, the height at the 12th is around 2/32". I don't aim for that...they're just end result figures. My two J Basses end up about the same. The neck on my 79 Pre-EB wont adjust perfectly straight so I don't have to go through the procedure of adding relief to eliminate buzz at the first few frets. It's relief is card thickness. If it could be adjusted straight, the relief would probably be a lot less.

(remember....if the truss nut has excessive resistance, take it to a tech)
