another setup question

sorry for starting another high and low action thread, please dont hang me my setup on my sub seems to be perfect until i go into drop D. when i fret the low D it has almost no sustain, quite frustrating. i believe it is touching a fret, but it is hard to tell where. can anyone tell me what i should do? thanks

what string gauge do you use? If they're 9's, the low E would probably be too thin, and when tuning whole step down, you would turn that string into spaghetti

Not really. I use 9's on my low E dropped to D is fine. Most people (like those with a d tuna) would stick with the same gauge for the sake of detuning one string down a semitone. It could just be that the action on that string needs taking up a tad.

9-42's maybe ...

I use 9-46's tuned down a half step on my axis. When i drop the low Eb to Db ... it still plays just fine ! You really have to dig the pick in to get a tight and crunchy "Unchained". I have fairly high action too.

Or just use a 46 on the low E. I used to do this on my Axis when I used a 9-42 set.
