Any tips on being a new Musicman owner?

How's it going guys? I recently purchased a used Sterling from the classifieds for $500. Seems to be one from the late 90's (waiting on serial NO. thread response). It's a beautiful piece of equipment and reminiscent of the tones I expected from tinkering at the local music stores.

Now that I have my dream bass, I realized I don't know ish about it. I bought it used so there's no manual or anything. Also, I have only owned training basses, meaning all valued at probably $200 or less. I am now owning a higher end bass guitar, albeit used, what are some tips to keep it functional.

I am getting it "set up" this week also polished, with new strings (dude had purple strings on this!) Anyways, what should I tell the technicians, and what questions should I expect to answer from them. I am going to a local and reputable shop, but they are charging me $90 just for the set up, so I really want this to be the best set up possible, what should I tell them?

I've never in my 10+ years of playing gotten someone to set up my guitar, weird to think someone is going to have their hands all over it etc. as I always been one to change strings myself etc. but it is a used guitar and I don't know much about it, any other tips yall can give me or am I over thinking all this?
 
could have saved money by reading the set up tips on here, was it unplayable?
 
I'd suggest reading the FAQ. You may want to give your tech the info under "How do I setup my Music Man Bass".

Also...try Cobalt strings. They are awesome.

It's definitely in playing condition. I actually had an inaugural jam session with it last night. I just wanted some of the tips and tricks, so of you more seasoned owners could give me. Maybe things that would't be in the FAQ such as person anecdotes etc...Just some stuff for a previous, and perpetual "cheap" bass guitar owner.
 
I think the only thing cheap about your Sterling was the price. You got a great deal for $500. That's at least half the price of the low end resale value.

My tip; play it more. :-D
 
definitely remember to wipe down the neck after playing. it'll save you work later on. I keep dragging my heels on totally refinishing the neck on my SR4, which really needs it. First though I have to take it off and clean it with murphy's oil soap, a toothbrush, etc to see if I can get years of grunge out of the wood.
