Anybody Own a SUB 1??

I'm looking for a new hardtail guitar after I sold my hardtail Wolfgang (to get an axis). I'm interested in the SUB 1's, but I've never heard anything about them. I especially like the 1 HB model. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist, so that guitar fits my style.

Interested in your thoughts/opinions.

I did a review a while back, you should search the first 10 pages. It's called "my EBMM SUB1 review" ...either way, even though you play rhythm, it's better to get the double humbucker IMHO. You won't play rhythm for the rest of your life.

BTW There's been a lot of talking 'bout SUB1's here. Check it out. Unfortunately, apparently I just stumbled up on a bad old one.

They're fantastic guitars. When comparing the SUB1 to my Silhouette (aside from spec differences) in terms of quality and whatnot I wouldn't say that the SUB feels like much less of an instrument. They're two different beasts for different reasons.

I'd say try one out first before you buy though because of the painted necks. The two necks are shaped the same, they play the same but feel slightly different. I've always felt that painted necks cheapen the feel of an instrument. As a side, some French philosopher agrees with me in his book "Mythologies", but refering to a different context - old wooden toys vs. plastic toys. (If you fancied a bit of extra bed-time reading ).

That's pretty much my only gripe with the SUB, and even so is simply personal preference. In the painted necks defense it is well made and doesn't feel sticky whatsoever.

Thanks for pointing out the idea about searching for othrer threads. It never occured to me to try it.

One of my flaws/weaknesses is that I'll buy a guitar based on looks. Esp with EBMM. I bought my Axis based on rep. I'd never played it until it showed up.

The SUB 1 looks mean. I love the diamond plate pickguard. Plus, I like a good basic setup. One or two pickups, 1 vol, 1 tone (though I think it's overkill - I keep mine on 10), and no trem (unless it's a Floyd). the paint on the back of the neck is a bit of a letdown, but I'd have to try it out.

Where I live right now, the music stores don't stock alot of EBMM, so trying one out is hit or miss. I'm getting ready to move to Birmingham, AL, and they should have a few more options available.

I already have two guitars with Floyds, but I'd like a hardtail to give me another option in playing style.

the guitar is fantatic - the painted neck has no bearing on the guitar and it sounds good too, the body has no countours so that was my gripe but neither do the EVH or the morse and I love them as well, but seriously the neck is smooth, smoother than a strat neck that is lacquered for sure -

I'll add my 2 cents too...I just bought one from Pete this week. I got a graphite, HH, trem, diamond plate. (Sorry Raz - I really wanted graphite )

For the price, I think the Sub is fantastic. Sure, you can tell it's a cheaper model, but it really does feel and play like an EBMM. I really like the painted neck. I think it feels just as good as the unfinished neck of my JP6 - it's just not as pretty. It's got a satin finish, so it slides nice - no sticky binding from sweat like with my LP Custom. I also really like the textured body finish. No worries about fingerprints. It feels kind of 'industrial'...perfect for metal The pups are nice too. I wasn't expecting to be impressed, but they're really very good. They put the stock pups on my Ibanez to shame. My patches seem to come alive now!

There are probably three things I'd change. First of all, I'd add some body contours. Depending on your playing position and the condition of your wrists, it could cause problems. The second thing is the pickguard. The diamond plate wasn't what I was expecting. It's more of a very thin layer of aluminum over a thin piece of wood or stiff cardboard. It's not an aluminum block if that's what you're thinking. It's nice, but I think it looks a little cheap. Lastly, I'd probably put in larger frets. They're a little narrow for me.

Regardless of what I'd change, it's still a great guitar and I'd buy another one in a second....

Anyhoo, as soon as you add contours, you're asking for a more expensive guitar, and therefore it wouldn't be a SUB 1. But I know what you are saying, after playing my JP7, the SUB 1 feels different, but I adapt quickly. I have been thinking about modding my SUB 1 even further...stripping the back of the neck, and shaving a few contours into it...but alas I am but a lazy slob, so it remains a dream drifting in the night!
Maybe, if I can later convince Pete to apply some funcky paint, it could be worth it
