Axis after Axis...

About a month ago I started this thread to ask for some direction. The poll suggested a JP 1st, then a Luke, but an awful lot of people were steering me towards the Albert Lee.

Now, I'm not ruling out any of the above, but a real beauty of a guitar showed up on my doorstep today: an Axis Sport MM90. Wow, it really was everything I was craving for smooth sounds. Lush, dreamy tones just stream from those pickups on demand.

I've attached some pics. My Silo is waiting for a new pickguard so is sitting there gutted, lonely, and heartbroken.

Yeah, I actually prefer Axis Sport's simple, no frill design. No fancy binding, tops...etc.,
just a very hard working blue collar guitar. It'd be even better with the pickguard, especially now I know how to "customize" the clear ones.

Keep in mind I've only had one night with them so far, but I think they're better at clean than driven. Let me clarify a little...

The DiMarzio humbuckers in the Axis Super Sport just light up when driven hard, and it can seem like a challenge to tame all that energy and bring it into Smoothsville (turning the volume down to halfway helps).

The Axis Sport has a much more controlled tone when driven, definitely not aggressive. I love it for this aspect, and think that it makes a wonderful companion to the ASS. As I mention above, I have to reassemble my Silo soon and I'll then post a comparison between the Axis Sport and Silo HSH.

I spent some more time with my new AS this morning. The overdriven tones are really really good, especially with the tweed and twin models in my Boss GT-8. It does break up nicely in that 60's vintage way and gets lost in the newer 5150/Metal setups. As can be expected from a guitar that has such a great clean tone, the driven sound is more dependant on the pedal or amp than it is on the guitar. The ASS has a character of its own that cuts right through every distortion model I've thrown at it. You know it's there, whether you like it or not

That's an older model, lite saddles & flat neck plate. Exactly like My previous AS (different color).
