Am I right in thinking that due to the shape of the stock Dimarzios ( baseplate has 2 "ears ")
that swapping with other makes isnt possible?

I don't see why you couldn't use others. The 2 ears is a common configuration for humbuckers that I've seen. The only issue is that the slots for the ears on the Axis are somewhat triangular - you may need to do some minor surgery on the ears of any replacement, e.g. trim the edges to make the ears triangular, if the replacement pickups have rectangular shaped ears.

You could always trim the ears to fit the cavity. Marko from The Vaticants does just that in this video to install a set of EVH Wolfgang pickups:
Also, Suhr humbuckers might fit without issue:

There maybe others too…

Bareknuckle Pickups will also make them with the triangular tabs if requested.

+1 on the Suhrs, they are underrated IMO.

That's right, you will "screw up" the pickup, both with the ears, and with the screws into the wood which strip the regular holes.

That makes it tough finding the perfect pickup by buying and selling used pickups.
