Hi Guys,

I love my Axis (with rosewood board) - but I'm considering changing out the pickups. I'm finding that the pickups have a little too much high end bite.

I'm debating swapping out with the Duncan Distortion in Bridge and Jazz in the neck position. By any chance has anyone used this confing?

Also the Axis by default has the bridge pickup very close to the strings - what exactly does this do to the sound? What would lowering the pick up do to the sound?

The Duncan Distortion has more high end and bite than an Axis PU.. by leaps and bounds. Its a brutal one trick pony flame throwing monster. I can't say I found one redeeming quality in that pickup. If you want something more high output with some warmth and usable tone, go for the custom custom.
 
I bought an ASS once with a Jazz in the neck. I was unimpressed and wished the previous owner would have kept the OEM pickups. I sold it at a big loss because it did nothing for me.

If you do replace the pickups, keep the original ones.
 
Consider a DiMarzio Air Zone in the bridge if you want less high end bite and with comparable mid and low grunt.

I am surprised that you find the Axis neck pickup having too much high end bite.
 
I tried a SD distortion in bridge position of my Silo (because it hadn't stock pickups any more)... didn't like it as well as the JB it came with. Both didn't sound right. The SD jazz I put in neck position sound pretty good and is still there. I removed the middle position and wired it like an ASS.
 
Well based on the feedback maybe its not the guitar. Im running it with a Mark V combo. This amp does have some highs that need to be controlled. So maybe that is the culprit.

I don't suppose anyone here happens to have a Mark V and Axis combo by chance?
 
My suggestion - Next time you even think of swapping out the pickups in your Axis go and stare at yourself in the mirror for a few minutes then slap yourself squarely in the face because the Axis pickups are 'probably' the best pickups ever made. You naughty boy.
 
Please sell me the axis bridge pickup if you do take it out.
