Hi Guys - I haven't posted over here before, but I am considering buying myself a bass setup so as I can get more work! I won't tell you what I have at the moment as its embarassing but needless to say there will be a EBMM soon I hope!
What I am after is advice on a bass amp that won't break my back or the bank - as I suffer from a weakness in both!
Something loud enough to play decent sized venues and work in a rock band. I'd be grateful for any advice on what to start looking at.

If you're willing to part with a little coin, you could give Gallien-Krueger. Not as expensive as some of the others but an amazing sound.

About the back issue, the GK Neo 212 is 64 lbs. and the Neo 115 is 54 lbs.

If you decide to go GK, i'd recommend www.rmcaudio.com

They have the best GK prices with rockin' service.
 
Ashdown and Gallien-Krueger are the top two for me, although I do have a thing for Mesa~Boogie Road Ready cabs (the older ones, not Mesa Engineering).

Special mention: Ampeg...especially since I just got home with my new SVT-350! :D

Ashdown is nice, especially since you are in the UK, they should be very available for you. I like Eden stuff as well.

eden is always a good option.. you can get the smaller watt heads pretty cheap and they still have solidoutput (+tone).. GK is still tempting me a lot... everyone raves about them... if you want cheap but big output (with a little less sound quality) you could go hartke.

What's your budget? What size venues will you be playing? Will the bass rig be required to carry the room, or will the bass be sent through the PA? What type of car do you own? Do you prefer an all in one combo amp, separate head + cabinet, or a rack mount pre/power amp rig? There are of questions, and lot of possible answers.

Also if you want to get more work you'll need to buy a bass too ;)

This is true as it would be with guitar amps which I have some experience of - Bass amps just have passed me by a bit - but I am concerned about the weight issue!
Cost - I would hope not more than £700 English pounds - less if possible - Venues - round here I think I need to carry the room as well as PA - clubs poss with 300 max - I can't think of any venues bigger that wouldnt need or have a PA.
I am not too bothered about the type of amp - combo etc - but it needs to be not too heavy - maybe a seperate head/ cab would be better for this.
My car can fit all my guitar stuff in and more so thats not an issue.
 
Well - I got myself a markbass 'combohead' combo amp - I'm not sure of its power - but it'll do the job for me for now - its sounds fantastic and not too heavy either!!! It is damn loud though for its size - absolutely made up!
My Ibanez ATK sounds awesome through it - now I gotta save up for a Sting Ray!!

my G.K. rig is small & light weight & sounds absolutly awesome.
i play in a metal bank & with my 'ray i get a very Flea type of sound,it is with out doubt the best rig i have used in the 27 years i've being playing.
check out the bass centre in london's website,they have some good prices on G.K.
+ if its good enough for Flea its good enough for me.:p
 
Yeah - thanks I might do that sometime when I need to get more gear - it'll be either GK or markbass I think - but I really like this markbass - I want a bass like yours now - Saw the pics in your post earlier - nice piece of kit!
