So, I may be in the market for a new guitar, and I'm thinking Axis. i see the obvious difference between it and the Axis SS- tremolo, 5 way switch, and tone pot. What's the general vibe over here about these two beasts?

Outside of the obvious, which you're aware of, it then comes down to preference. You'll get the same body dimensions and contours, body wood* and cap, neck profile, radius, etc so fit, comfort and feel will be generally equivelent.

The Axis is what it is - a maple board, floyd equipped, dual humbucker if thats what you're looking for.

The ASS provides all the other tonal options with the 5 switch splitting the coils on the pickups, hardtail or vintage tremolo, maple or rosewood, piezo and the availability of different pick ups (* the MM90 version has an ash body rather than basswood).

I don't know what your guitar experience is or what you're looking to play but from a versatility standpoint I would go with the ASS an configure it to what I wanted. I went with the mm90's piezo and hardtail. I'm not floyd player and don't think I ever will be, but if thats what you play then go for it.

good luck

Or - Buy an Albert - underappreciated but overwhelming :D

I find i can set the action more specically on my Ass as it has individual saddles that can be lowered. With my evh the action is still great but can only be done at the bass side or the trebil side. There are other ways of doing this on a floyed type trem, but it involves shimms ect...

the 5 wasy is great, as is the tone control.

my evh rocks hard too.

Try them both....and you will probably end up with 1 of each!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Jonny

Unless you really use the tremolo for heavy duty dive-bombing, I'd recommend going for the Axis Super Sport simply for the extra flexibility and easy string changes... Locking tuners with the EBMM "vintage" trem give you great tuning stability, without all the maintenance headaches commonly associated with a Floyd Rose trem. Two extra pickup selections and a Rosewood fretboard option are icing on the cake, imho...
