does the bass completely not make a sound through an amp if the battery is dead? or does it just sound crappy?

Get a cheap multimeter so you can periodically check the voltage of your battery. 9V batteries start around 9.4V. I ditch them if they get much below 9V.
Mind you I'm (ermm...) resting as a musician at the moment so the battery isn't getting a whole lot of use!

If you can't afford a multi meter, your tongue works great. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between a new battery and an old one, using this method.

just make sure you take an extra battery to a gig. you don't want a crappy sound, or worse, no sound, without the battery

First your bass will sound crappy as the battery drains. Then it will make no sound at all. Remember what your mother always said: Make sure to bring a spare!
