Does EBMM have a good relationship w/ the SD business? Ever consider them in any production/future guitar, or is there too tight a relationship w/ Dimarzzio? Do all the Dimarzzio models essentially replicate anything SD has to offer anyway?

Same question goes for any other pickup company. I was just mentioning Seymour Duncan because they are considered one of the big ones.

PS, thanks to Luke for going w/ the EMGs. I also love the pickups in my Axis, just never tried SD's for whatever reason. Thanks BP

P.S. A nice little tip off to any UK'ers, check out this guy. One guy, therefore low overheads, and he'll be able to build stuff to whatever spec's you need. Including some very interesting/tasty designs on them (check out the exotic woods). Last time I bought myself a swineshead was for the bridge in my silo, and they were £30 then, they've gone up since, but I'll still use them again nonetheless.

Well not that anyone cares but I find Dimarzios superior to SD's. There are some good SD's but always a better dimarzio to keep me from buying one.:D

yeah i've found the same too!! some student will come in for lessons with a strat with SD's in it, and i always think it sounds average, i have dimarzio virtual vintage's in one of my strat, kills all the Sd's ive heard. but then again, Lindy Fralin's kill the Virtual Vintage's out the door!!!!

only talking single coils though...

I was under the impression that the pups in the Albert Lee are Seymour Duncan's. Some pickups sound better in particular guitar. Personally, I think DiMarzio's sound fantastic in the Axis. I can't think of a SD, that would sound better. But for singlecoils I go with SD. Most of my guitars are SD equipped, but the nicest sounding pup I've ever come across is my 'mystery DiMarzio.' Nothing but DiMarzio and Made In USA on the back of it. If I knew what particular model it was, I'd have 'em in all my humbucker guitars.

From my limited understanding the neck and middle pups on the AL are SSL-1's and the bridge pup is a Tele pup of some sort from SD. I have a SSL-1 in the neck of another guitar I have and it does sound very close to the neck pup in my AL. Different wood and types of guitars though, so I can't really say they sound *exactly* the same.

The only SD pickups we use are for the Albert Lee.

I have a good not great relationship with the Duncan people. Many stories but basically when I bought Music Man they had ZERO interest with working with us. They blew us off something bad. Larry Dimarzio and Steve Blucher really were nice and made great stuff for us. We really have the design and engineering ability now to make all of our own stuff but I am very loyal to people that stuck with us when we werent trendy. In saying that please dont think that I am disprepecting the chops that Steve and Larry bring to us.

Its funny because I went to Duncan and EMG real early to make a stingray pickup that would be an option and they both blew me off . I am so glad they did

when we were woriking with EVh I went to Larry and Steve and said I will involve you
in the project as long as you understand that anything that we collectively come up is Ernie Ball Music Man's property and cannot be sold under the Dimarzio name or to other makers. I also said if EVH and EBMM parted that they would have to agree to stay with us.

THree things I can tell you about Larry Di Marzio...when I was in the hospital for the kidney deal he visited me 3 out of the 5 nights each time with some great cake or champagne if he could sneak it in and just really was out of the goodness of his heart. The second is he published a book of his photos in japan and donated all of the proceeds to the Casey Lee Ball Foundation when it really needed the money. The third is to tell EVh and his people that he made a deal with me and nothing they could threaten or offer was going to get him to dishonor Ernie or Sterling or the entire Music man Company. He also told Hartley Peavey that our guitar would be harder to make than he thought.....

This is why i admire EBMM because they are a company that honors morals and integrity. They are a company that goes back to the grassroots of being as good as your word... when the word of a MAN means nothing these days you have Sterling getting back to the roots of running a great business. Thanks BP!

Someday, the world will recognize the genius that is Dudley. The pickups (and everything else) that have come from him are mind-boggling.

You have been fortunate in so many respects...your grandfather and especially your dad, but you've taken it to a completely different level. It's not just about being fortunate - you're also really good at what you're doing.

I learn from you almost every day, and what I learn is valuable. I'll see you next week. Thanks for the lessons in things that go way beyond guitars and basses.

Believe me when I say that the Seymour Duncans in the AL are spot on!
Horses for courses - I love my h/buckers in my Les Paul, the stacked coils (Seymour D. and Bill Lawrence in my Tele), but the SD's in the AL are great!
Now remind me -what guitar/pickups does Albert play? ;)

I had a set of Lindy Fralin ‘vintage hots’ ready to drop into my Silo Sp. Upon receiving and testing the guitar with its EB custom Dimarzzios, I sold the Fralins immediately. Not that the Fralins weren’t nice in their own way, but the p’ups MM chose for this model are far more versatile and thus useable.

Imo, it isn’t just the way a p’up sounds in an empty practice room, playing one or two particular styles of music, it’s how well it can enhance the sound of a recording or live setting. If I’m only going to pack one or two guitars on a gig, I want them to cover a variety of tones and dynamics. MM’s choices of p’ups in the Silo Sp (SSH) are incredibly superior in this sense. And with all this, they are not at all generic sounding.
