Hard case,

Ever since i dropped a guitar down a flight of concrete stairs into Jimmy Z's in WA state, watching it tumble down end over gruesome end, each time making the worst sound i have ever heard... but it was fine, the case wasn't even cracked, it ended up with some strange white stain i still can't identify, but thats metal for ya!

Gigbag cuz I don't have a car so I have to take public transportation and go on foot.
So a gigbag on your back is quite handy I find... ;-)
It is a Rockbag from warwick ! Good thing no ?
 
hardshell. if i bring my bass i usually bring other stuff with it. a gigbag just doesnt cut it. besides i have to retune it everytime i take it out. i dont like that. i want to be able to pull out my bass plug in and play.
 
Gig bags for around town and a small suitcase with cables/pedals/charts/tools/socks

Hardcases only for travel (SKB Bass Safe)

gig bags are far more easy to carry around. put it on your back, head in one hand cab in the other.;)

the only downside is that you can't put stickers onto a gig bag but luckily I found a cool Zoso iron-on that looks sweet!
 
i think those new soft/hardshell cases are nice... its a hard inter. with a soft exter. and its light and you can carry it on your back
 
Hard case always. Even when schlepping it on foot. Gig bags have straps. Straps can break, so the thought of wearing a bass on my back is scary. I don't understand the economics of protecting a $1000 or $2000 instrument with $20 worth of vinyl or nylon.

Mine's a $80 gigbag wich a don't think the straps would break...
Also hardshell cases are heavy. hardshell cases have handels :handels can break too...
I also have a hardshell case but its too darn heavy compared to the gigbag that is...
Hardshell case is a good to store your instrument.

I do agree that it can detune your bass but I tune my bass always anywayz before I play

I agree. That's why I went with an InCase Dub Bag. It's absolutely a safe bet for my basses. It has a neck pillow, and movable pillows. Not to mention a built in backpack system complete with waist strap. Heck--it's even got a raincoat in case you get caught in bad weather.

I'm going to be adding a SimBag so I can take only one bass with me, but I certainly don't feel that my bass is unsafe when I knock that 1" thick padded hard corrugated polypropylene board panels on anything.

Hardshell cases are heavy? Any SKB / Hiscox / Gator moulded case is featherweight, yet provides excellent protection. Plywood cases and aluminium ATA flight cases are "heavier", but moulded ABS is very lightweight.

If the handle on my hard case breaks, the case takes the hit when it falls to the ground. You can't say the same thing about a soft, pliable gig bag.

Once you kids start getting gigs and loading your gear into vans, or worse still, having other people load your gear into vans, you'll forget you ever used a gig bag.

Gig bags are like pimples - common for teenagers, but don't last.

Hard shel - ever since my drummer "helped" me load in one night - my old Fender's neck has never been the same.:eek:

You apparently haven't seen some of the new generation of gigbags. There is nothing "soft or pliable" about the InCase bags, and the chance of the handle ripping off is effectively nil.

If I was touring with a band in a van, again, yeah, I'd use a hard case. But, since it's me loading my basses into my truck, I am not worried about anything being placed on top of the Bag. And, honestly, short of putting a 4x12 cab on top of it, I wouldn't really worry about it in a van, either.

Considering how many working pros use leather gig bags, I'm surprised you are referring to Marcus Miller, Will Lee, etc, etc as "teenagers."

I wouldn't put any of my basses into any of the $20 gigbags you refer to--just like I wouldn't get a $20 chipboard case for any of my instruments. But, a good quality bag will easily stand up to a good quality case for most bassists' purposes.

Even If I had a personal guitar tech and a roadie to schlep my rig, I would still cart my basses from the hotel room to the limo to the gig in a hard case. To me, it's a question of respect and care for a beautiful instrument.

10-4? Well, American Idol is the highest rated show in America, so I don't really put too much stock in numbers....:D

To equate using a gigbag with not caring about your instruments is ridiculous. I don't even have a problem taking my $4000+ custom one-of-a kind bass in a gigbag to play a gig. I designed the bass from the ground up and even visited it many times during its construction. So, I assure you that I certainly have plenty of respect for my basses.

You're obviously a lot rougher moving gear from point A to point B than I am. I'm going on 16 years of using gig bags with nary a single problem--even when I was touring.

I honestly don't see how it's possible to be so "black/white" when it comes to gigbags. They have different levels of quality just like everything else in the world. Just because you have decided to cart a case every time you play doesn't make anyone using a gigbag a pimply teenager or someone who doesn't care about their basses.

Period.

But, you know, live and let live, I say. Anyone who can't agree with that should just be taken outside and shot. ;)
