Caught Paul Gilbert playing at the Iridium last night.

Simply an outstanding show, he played a variety of covers ranging from "Synchronicity" by The Police to Brubeck's "Blue Rondo A La Turk" all with the Les Paul Trio. Plenty of other tasty covers as well but what struck me the most was how he makes the most out of every little bit of movement with his picking hand. For those who haven't been to the Iridium it's a great place to catch a show, very intimate despite both of Gilbert's performances being completely sold out.
 
Gilbert is awesome. He is my second fav player just besides Mr. Morse...

His picking technique is nothing short of phenomenal...
 
yeah he's a beast all right, been my hero since I started playing, I went to his Guitar Great escape and spent a whole week taking classes, and learning new ideas and techniques from a variety of instructors, with a full blown concert 5 nights in a row. Incredible. oh and we older gents drank every night with Guthrie Govan and Sam Coulson...haha

anybody attending this year? Andy Timmons will be there, as well as returning guest Scotty Johnson, who is an instructor from Berkely and an amazing guy too.
 
Paul is also one of my favorite players! I remember listening to Frenzy for the first time, on the plastic pull out record that used to come in Guitar Magazine. I was 17. His speed and clarity were unsurpassed back then (as far as I knew).

I hope to see him in concert some day.

How much are those week classes? I know he has an Online guitar teaching thing.
 
From a guitar playing perspective, how fun it is to watch someone who just "gets it"? His choice of covers was quite varied and he even joked that he had to sing the vocals in a much lower key when singing Dio's vocals on "Man on a Silver Mountain" My favorite moment was the Brubeck cover, such tasty playing and great interplay with the band. It was also a rare treat to be at a show with other guitarists and not see one "head hunter" pose with the arms crossed and the "I can do that" look :)

I'm not even going to get into Gilbert's alien length fingers........
 
Paul rocks!!! He's my favorite guitar.

Man, the memories of the good old days you just brought!!! I discovered Paul the same way as you did! Was about your age too. Man, I feel old thinking about this...
 
Great playing by all!!! I Love Gilbert... and I also love the Police - would have been nice if Pablo had spent four minutes actually learning the lyrics...

Not that I live in New York, but I really feel like I want to keep abreast of the shows at the Iridium. I had no idea that Paul Gilbert was going to play there. Not that I would have necessarily been able to go, but I might have tried to make arrangements to go had I known.

Really enjoyed the guitar/piano parts too.....so refreshing when it is two different instruments. The guitar duel thing IMO gets silly must of the time.
 
I'm so disappointed I missed this one. Was it mostly interpretations of songs like synchronicity was, or did he do a lot if his standard rock
 
He did all covers but Synchronicity was his interpretation, the rest he just extended for musical breaks for each musician on stage and some elongated Gilbert solos. It was great to see a legend stretch out in this kind of setting!!
