Changing strings

This is a subject of some debate. Some people consider removing all the strings before putting on new strings to be harmful for the strength of the neck while others say it doesn't matter. I've always been cautious but sometimes I remove all strings to be able to clean the fretboard thoroughly. What is the recommended method for Musicman basses?
