Went to see Charlie Hunter last night- man, that guy can play!

If you've never heard him before, he's a jazz guitar/bass player. He's got a 7 stringer with 4 guitar strings and 3 low bass strings - really, really cool instrument. Unbelievable how he can play bass up and down the neck while playing the craziest guitar lines.

I've heard his stuff before, but waching him play really blew me away. Made me want to re-thing my whole approach to playing. If you ever get the chance to see him, check him out!

I think uses a bass amp for the 3 low strings and a normal guitar amp for the 4 guitar strings. That also makes it even more clever.

He does! It's wild- he get a great leslie sound out of the guitar (with a Rotosphere or something) but the bass strings are clear and coming at you from another direction.

Beej! Very cool that you went to see Charlie Hunter. The radio station has a number of CDs by him (with bands, and solo, etc.) - in my personal collection I have a CD by a band called T. J. Kirk, name of the CD is Four to One. Great stuff, Charlie also plays an eight string on it... i also highly recommend CH with Pound for Pound - name of the CD is Return of the Candyman.

8 string novax with fanned frets.

3 bass strings, 5 guitar strings. each running through their own pickup systems and to seperate amps.

Almost bought his DVD with quintet this weekend when buying my Eric Johnson DVD.

Never heard him. DVD said he played an 8 string on it

bollocks, I didn't know he HAD a dvd. I have to see that...

his new album is quite good. but I really like a quasi world music project called "earth tones" he was involved in... there was a nifty cover of edie brickell & the new bohemians "what I am" on it.
