We all have serious money invested in our equipment. I had a cheap acoustic that the bridge pulled right off the guitar a few years ago. I just got back into playing seriously a year ago and purchased some quality gear. I live in eastern Virginia about 30 minutes from the ocean. I decided that I needed to monitor and control the humidity in my guitar room. I keep my guitars on a Hercules guitar stand.I purchased an Acurite model at Lowes 00309SBDI hydrometer for $10. The humidifier is the pure guardian H8000B. I can keep the room at 50% with no problem. I am sure that when the cold dry winter arrives the humidifier will be working more. My point is know what your humidity is and if you live in a dry area you may need to get some type of device to control the humidity. I decided to control it in the entire room. Just an FYI .

Yes, maintaining an ideal humidity level is very important for wood instruments - I've seen violins that have exploded because they have been hung on the wall next to a wood stove during the winter.

I live in Utah where it is insanely dry. Makes for awesome snow but it's hell on acoustic instruments.

A local mom and pop store gave me this advice and it has worked out very well. Get the D'Addario Two-Way Humidification System, and combine it with the Acoustic Guitar Humidifier.

My Taylor sits in a softshell case. So it is constantly slowly losing water vapor through it. The sponge provides a replenishable supply and the gel packs regulate the humidity. If you don't do the sponge, the gel packs will deplete very quickly. I just replaced them after what must have been 6 months. So the sponge will save you a bit of money in the long run.

Of course the ultimate solution is installing a humidifier on your air conditioner. Most modern units will be equipped to have one installed.
