I think once or twice a year would be fine. Mask the body so you don't get any oil/wax on it - cos it's a bugger to get off!

Actually i have gone to the steel wool and lemon oil method. I think the steel wool gets the fretboard much cleaner and i like the finish the lemon oil leaves behind.
