Excuse me for being a total newbie.

I saw a Sub 1 at Guitar Center over the weekend and really liked it. The neck was very comfortable. I wasn't thrilled by the finish though. That being said, for the price, I might just get it.


My question: How does the OLP Petrucci compare to the Sub 1? Are the necks similar? Build quality?

The prices are about the same. GC is blowing the Sub 1 out. Unfortunately, I don't know of any local shops that carry the OLP Petrucci, so I don't have the opportunity to compare the two. GC only has the MM1 OLP.

As you probably already know, the OLP's are not Ernie Ball, ernie ball licence the designs out to OLP, so please don't put them in the same league as an Ernie Ball. I see the OLP's as a beginners guitar, they are good for the price, like l say, you spend $200's on a guitar, thats what you'll get.

I haven't played a SUB 1 plugged in, so don't know what the pick ups sound like, l take it you are talking about the HxH. I say if you love the sound of the sub 1, get it, they are nice guitars non the less.

I'd say grab the SUB1, 'cause at least that's a real Music Man guitar. The OLP is not made by Music Man... it's made by OLP.

If you buy the SUB1, you're still getting Music Man quality and attention to detail.. just at a bargain price 'cause the finishes aren't so fancy and the hardware isn't quite as high-end.

Plus, if you buy a SUB you'll be keeping it 'in the family'. ;)
 
I think lots of folks are becoming aware of eb guitars through the sub line. Their higher priced guitars are about twice as much or more (and worth it).

It also seems people who buy the sub guitar end up switching out the pickups to ones they may prefer.

Most of us here own the higher priced models and may not be the best resource. You can also try harmony central for sub reviews.
 
I've been aware of EBMM guitars for some time. I just don't play enough to justify spending the kind of money it takes to get a real JP or Axis. I'd buy either in a heartbeat if I could.

I can get the HH Sub 1 with trem for just under $400. The more I think about it, the more it sounds like a good deal. How would you guys rate the pickups? I haven't played it plugged in yet. GC isn't exactly a great place to hear anything. When I try guitars out, I try not to let everyone in a 3 block radius hear me. Not so with some of the kiddies at GC.

iv'e played both ........the sub gets it by 100 miles.......CRUSHES the olp......the pickups are also GREAT !!!people changing out the pickups in a sub are ..........nevermind.......

If you wanted something that sounds similar to the Petrucci, get the Sub 1 HH, and also invest in A DiMarzio Steves Special and Air Norton, thats what Mr Petrucci used in his Ibanez's.

I LOVE my Sub1... love the finish, the feel and the sound....no need to change the pickups at all... LOVE IT!
 
I have an old DiMarzio MegaDrive lying around. From what I understand, It's close to the Steve's Special. I'll probably drop that in, and either leave the stock neck pickup, or put in a SD Jazz that I also have in the drawer looking for a home.
 
Also, GC usually has a room you can try the guitar in. Just bring your amp, or ask to use one of theirs if they have it.

Why? the stock pickups are awesome! :p

So is the finish... no finger prints... that's nice.. no polishing. And it doesn't really look all that bad either :)
