...........I've bought an OLP Tony Levin 5 to partner my Stingray.

I won't get my hands on it untill christmas day, it's a gift from my wife, but I'm really looking forward to getting a set of Super Slinkys on it and getting stuck in.

I'm fully aware that it won't be in the same league as my 'ray, but the reviews are generally pretty good, and it'll keep me going untill I can afford an SR5 or Bongo 5.

I've never had a 5er, so it'll be new territiory for me, but the low B will come in handy for the jazz/hip hop stuff I play along to on my Tascam CD-BT1.

No idea if it'll get used live, I have a jazz for backup right now, but I'll see how it measures up tone wise, and if I like it, I'll try it at a gig. I just wonder if a pre-amp upgrade might be needed first?

My 'training wheels' 5ver was a OLP TL as well. I have since graduated to a SUB5 and, hopefully, someday I'll be able to get my hands on a 20th SR5!! I think of the OLP as my 'gateway drug'! :D Now, I just want more of the 'hard stuff'! :D Get used to it. You'll be here soon, as well!

Thanks mate.

Yeah, I read this thread before I ordered the bass. I'm a bit of a Levin fan too, so I kind of like the idea of having his sig bass. Also it'll be next year at least before I could afford my next MM, probably a SR5 or Bongo 5 (or 6!?!), so this seemed to by a great way to get me going on the road to 5 strings.

I play rock with the band live, so the 'ray is my #1 for that gig, but at home I play a lot of jazz type stuff, and I need a low B for that.

I can't wait to get my paws on it and get going, roll on the 25th!!

Cheers Komp,

No I don't spend much time on BC these days, I was there all the time when it was Bassworld, but a lot of the old regulars seemed to fade away when it changed to Basschat. It's still a great forum though, and I know ped and Kiwi have worked hard to get it all together.

Pepperman, I believe it's "What would Jimi do?" on the Resonator album, that Tony uses an OLP Levin sig bass.

That's the one! You know, I saw the Peter Gabriel "Growing Up Live DVD not too long ago and he uses his original peach SR5 that the Sig was based on on it and it sounds great!

Hey, anyone.... what IS that color anyway? I know it's discontinued, but what was it called?

I went for the natural coloured one in the end, mainly because I prefer a maple fretboard, but also I just wasn't sure about the "peach" colour.

However, my wife, who has the bass stored in her office 'till christmas, described the "natural" colour as "puke yellow!!!", so maybe I'd have been better with the peach!

Here is a link in case anyone besides me is curious as to how the OLP Tony Levin can be a "signature" model when Tony Levin doesn't actually play one.

http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/9012-tony-levin-signature-olp-out.html

Congrats Russ, sounds like a pretty good alternative to an SR5.

I think that I'm missing something fairly fundamental here. It's entirely possible that my lack of forum/posting savvy is to blame, if so my apologies but....

Does that mean Bovinehost is Tony Levin?
Or did he simply reproduce a body of text that was by Tony Levin as a thread post ?
Or in fact is the OLP Tony Levin sig a copy of one of Jack's basses ?

Bit confused...

The answer is "B"...

Those Tony Levin OLP's are really not bad...my guitarist bought one and had me set it up like my SR5. With a set up, it's a great little cheap bass.
