Creaky neck on new JP6

Hey gang,

I've been lurking on this board for the last couple of weeks, and I've got to say, this has to be the best community devoted to a manufacturer I've ever seen.

I hate for my first post to be somewhat negative, but I have a slight problem that may be easily solved:

I just purchased a brand new JP6 w/Piezo (mystic dream) and it is everything I knew it would be, except for the neck. It seems when I use the trem a lot, or do any major string bending, the neck sometimes *ticks* in the socket. Kinda like it's loose and slipping a notch. If I gently grab the headstock and the upper horn, I can pull the neck a slight amount and hear the neck slip.

My question is, should I send it to a shop, or should I tighten it myself?

In the old days, I would have to do my own setups and 'repairs' because I was a poor slob out on the road. But now I can afford to have a pro fix if it if you guys think it's better to do so.

I would think it would be covered under warranty. Take it to an authorized tech.

Hambucker is right....should be a warranty issue. Let an authorized tech mess with it. That way you can't be blamed for doing the "repair".

Also, Jongitarz (EB repair guru) might chime in here if he sees this thread.

I was also thinking that not all of us have guitar techs we would entrust our EB's too. Maybe those that do can mention theirs to us so that other forum members in that area can have another option.

Any good ones in Southern California?

are you shure the ting isn't coming from the nut slots ??? definitely try lubeing the nut slots first. are you using bigger strings than what came on it ????
and..make sure the neck bolts are nice and tight . use a proper size hand screwdriver....and CRANK em down clockwise on the bolts. (righty=tighty) w. no gap between the body and the neck where the bolts are. where the body and the neck are bolted together.
also could be the vibrato springs talking.....put a piece of foam rubber under your vibrato springs....that shuts them up.

There is a lot of tension on the neck. When you relieve that tension(dive bombing) all of a sudden there is no tension. The neck is bolted on. Sometimes it will make a noise when tension is relieved. Is it a problem? No. Is it something that can be dealt with? Yes. Are there any EB/MM authorized repair shops? Other than the factory, no. If you have tried what the others have suggested, and it still creaks, and it bothers you, you can ship it to us to evaluate.

I would also keep in mind that if you have a problem with a guitar, and take it to a tech to repair rather than letting us repair it, your warranty is voided. (look at the warranty card). Nobody knows our instruments better than we do. This is in no way a slam at any repair techs or shops, it is just our policy.

BTW the finish on your guitar is a very hard finish, and will crack if you over tighten the neck bolts. Be careful.

My Sub, bought new at a local Music shop came with their own 1 year set up along with a warranty...will I bring it to them...NO WAY!

A set up is different than a repair. The shop you bought it from may have good techs to do basic set ups. But for an actual repair, definitely send it in. Is this correct Jon?

My feeling is (I'm a hack of over 30 years) that it's the neck, not the nut. But the nut is definately noisy too That doesn't bother me because I can slip some graphite in there or lube or something. The *tick* in the neck, however, does bother me.

On any of my other guitars I would just jump in and start tweaking and tightening stuff but this guitar is, I dunno... different. It's so well made and such a pleasure to play, that I'm leary to do anything to it that might hurt it or the beautiful paint job.

Ok, I decided to just take a peek at how tight the screws are. Two seemed 'loose' relative to the others. I gently tightened them a notch and the neck is quiet. Ticks be gone! Woohoo!

You know i have noticed the EXACT same thing with my petrucci as well!! never though anything of it though. Jon... How exactly would you guys adress this? Would you make it go away? if so How? My warrenty is up in a month or two so i want to know.
