I took the neck off my Axis Sport this morning. The neck had printed on it: Nick JS 11/26/97. The neck pocket had 9/22/97, and the word RED printed in larger letters. I noticed just a smidgen of red paint on the wood in the neck pocket.

Does the date difference account for two months to make the body before doing the neck? And, what does RED indicate?

Any insight is appreciated.

RED I would think was the builders initials.

Have you posted pictures Bruce?

Mine says vintage and is vintage sunburst. I would say that red was the color the body was to be painted.;)

Glenn, I believe Nick JS is the builder’s name/initials. Yes, I posted a picture last week.

Dojo, that’s pretty much what I figured. I’m curious if there’s red paint beneath the black. The black looks entirely factory painted, but there was a tiny amount of red paint in the otherwise bare neck pocket. Seemed odd to me, hence my question.

Thanks, guys.

If you post the serial number here someone from EBMM should be able to tell you it's DOB as well as what colour it left the factory as.

Lenny, that’s a distinct possibility!

Thanks, Glenn.

Your guitar left the facory with a red finish. Built on 11/26/97

Aha! So it seems that it's colour is after market. That said, I do feel that theres a lot of snobbery regarding things not being original. How much did you pay for it? (Second hand prices are okay to be posted on here)

If you're happy with it, then it'd be a shame for this to put you off it.

Hi TwAn,

Whoa, this is not good news, but I do appreciate you finding out and letting me know.

This is very surprising to me as the finish looks perfectly executed, including the inside of the recessed neck mounting plate. Not a hint of “second hand” paint job, anywhere, other than that spec of red inside the neck pocket.

I don’t recall the exact negotiated price off eBay for it, but with shipping it came to around $700.

I have it on Harmony Classifieds for trade for a Sil or Sil Special, because I favor alder bodies and I like the neck shape better than the Axis Sport. The paint/color has nothing to do with the trade, as I do like the looks of the guitar.

Thanks to everyone,
Bruce

Bruce, well at least you now know. But on the bright side it sounds like whoever did the paint job is an excellent job of it.

Post it here, you might get lucky and find a taker here.

Hi Glenn,

I wasn’t sure if it was ok to post ‘for sale/trade’ signs to this forum. I have a guitar player friend staying with me for a couple of weeks. When he flies back home I’ll post it.

As for the paint, I’m not really disturbed by it. It looks great to my eyes, and like you’ve said, at least I know it’s a quality job. As for resale, it is what it is. If I lose a hundred bucks because of it, so be it. I believe it’s worth $700 as is. I’m not very interested in selling it, would rather trade for another Silo.

Thanks,
Bruce

I went over the Axis Sport with a fine tooth comb yesterday before shooting it for an eBay ad. I’m having a very difficult time believing the black paint isn’t a factory finish. The string ferrules and cavity edges show no sign of masking, no over-spray anywhere that I could find. If indeed this is an after-market job, it’s the best I have ever seen; but I have my doubts that there isn’t another explanation. I don’t mean to doubt or question the EB gods  , but there may have been something overlooked on this one.

Would a red guitar have a cream and black 3 ply pick-guard?

That guitar left the factory in red. If the new finish is nice, who cares?
