Do I need to use a humidifier ?

Hi, first time poster..........
I live in Phoenix,AZ and just purchased a used Axis Sport. It's a 1997 and was originally bought here in Phx. I have been leaving it out on a stand, but now I'm worried that I should keep it in a case with a humidifier...........any thoughts?

Dman - buy yourself a hygrometer and monitor the humidity level, if it falls below 40%, keep it in the case with a humdifier. Solidbodies are not as fragile as acoustics but it's a good idea in any case.

A repairman at a pro shop once told me a good rule of thumb - don't put your guitar through anything you wouldn't want to go through.

probably........the constant use of a/c usally brings a room's humidity down.
if you are leaving it out in the room all the time (as i do) ....like hook say's.......you sould go to radio shack (or somewhere) and get a little white thermo/hygrometer to monitor your room humidity....if your room is between 40 & 60%....your ok....if it is below 40...then you do.....
when you run your fingers along the edge of the frets along the side of the fingerboard....is it smooth..or can you feel the edge of the frets kinda sticking out ????? if so.....your guitar needs a drink.....(needs to be exposed to some higher humidity for a while .

If you are looking for a case humidifier - visit a cigar store (being in Canada I can get cuban cigars ), they usually sell little humidifiers to keep cigar cases humid - try one of those.

This being an Ernie Ball site -I shouldn't mention it but Planet-Waves also makes an excellent humidifier for acoustics - you could keep one of those in your case.

Dman, the other D-man here...welcome, fellow Phoenician!

If you have A/C in your joint (which is essentially standard issue for living in Phoenix in summer!), and as long as the temp doesn't fluctuate where you keep your guitar, etc. then you should be fine to keep 'er out. I have both of mine out and about right now on a stand without issue.

August is the time that you want to be concerned, or that time of the summer when we get our monsoons...that's when you want to raise your concern level about the humidity.

(Shame that we can't just lock that down to late July/early August like before, those patterns are all weird now, spread out all over the summer here and there!)

i had the opposite problem ...with humidity hear over 90 percent two of my eb neck plates split ..hairline cracks.

just sent the old plates in a got new ones back....the new serial numbers were different but a note was made in eb about the change .

Andy -you need to do the opposite, put the guitar in a closed off room with a dehumidifier (make sure to monitor the humidity so it does not get too dry).

BTW: Wherea are you where the humidity gets over 90% , Florida?

Hey Tommy - spot on info there.
I had a new heating system installed in my house two years ago.
The house now gets warm in the winter ha !!!
Anyway, because I always left my guitar out on it's stand I noticed that the frets on the side of the fingerboard were getting sharp to the touch. The guy who built the guitar for me, said exactly the same thing.
Consequently I'm going to get a couple of the Planet Waves humidifiers (unless EB do them of course).

P.S. heard any new Landreth stuff lately ?
