Is that the old 'cool paper under a clear pickguard' trick? I did that with one of my Bongos. However it's done, it looks great!

I think I have clear guards for basses that I no longer own! Yep, it's paper. Every few years, I go to the store and buy some art paper and change the look.

Did EBMM ever make clear guards or are they all aftermarket?

I'm pretty sure all my clear guards are aftermarket....although Dargin got me one once, so maybe not.

That’s what I thought. I’ve never seen anything new with a clear guard on it.
Didn’t Tony Levin have a StingRay many moons ago with a clear pick guard with a collage of picks under it ?

I think it was more than just under the guard. If I recall correctly, he superglued picks all over that bass.

Clear guards were pretty common on some finishes in the '80s. I've seen many on Bluebursts, Trans Reds, or Sunbursts, for example. I don't know, however, whether they were made by EBMM in-house or sourced externally.
Unlike more modern replacements, the original clear guards were very thin - around 1.5 mm - and tended to develop cracks around the screw holes.
