Well, last Friday Guitar Center made me an offer I couldn't refuse so I'm the proud owner of a new active Sub 5. I've had numerous 5'ers over the years and I think I've finally figured out how to use the 5 string...time will tell. I'm a 50+ blues bassist and I've been playing since the 60's. For the last 20 years or so, I've been a Fender (or Fender clone) man but I wanted something different this time (I have a MIM Classic P-Bass, a parts P-Bass, a fretless MIJ Jazz Bass and a Hamer 2-TEK CruiseBass). When I picked up the red Sub 5 with matte black pickguard, I knew I was onto something and when I plugged it in, I knew I was onto something special!
I am astounded by the build quality of this bass, especially considering the deal I got on it. The fretwork is immaculate and the 6 bolts holding the neck to the body insure that it is rigid and the neck pocket couldn't be any tighter. The abrasive finish may take a little getting used to, but it looks great and I'm sure its going to be very durable. This is my first active bass, but I think I'll adjust quickly. I don't know why it took me so long to try and buy a Music Man...and I hope I don't develop another bass brand-name addiction!
