EBMM mis-information in Guitarist Magazine

In the September 2005 issue of the mag, which I got this weekend, they have an article on signature guitars. There is a piece in there about the Wolfgang and the events leading up to its creation in which they say te following regarding EVH and EBMM guitars:

'Ed (Van Halen) became increasingly despondent at the perceived lack of quality of his MM guitars and, blaming his decision on this unlikely basis, jumped ship to the world's largest producer of musical instruments: Peavey."

I'm sure this is incorrect. I was under the impression that EBMM could only produce so many guitars per month and that EVH was unhappy with the number of available instruments, not the build quality.

BP, I think you may need to set the record straight with the mag!

On the other hand, the same article has a write up on the EBMM Steve Morse model and elsewhere in the mag, they have a mention of the SM y2d too.

The article as a whole has quite a few mistakes, wouldn't surprise me if that's another cock-up.

Guitarist usually speaks well of EBMM guitars so I find this a bit odd. They usually mention EBMM models as an alternative choice when reviewing new guitars too.

For eg. if reviewing a new Strat , they will also say check out Silo Special or Albert Lee as well.

I think Ed oughta start his own company to produce his guitars, since he seems perpetually dissatisfied. For his own sake, he should've done it long ago.

Perhaps that company can also sideline in production of rock vocalists..Ed seems to be dissatisfied with those as well

I'll bet anything that the author of the piece actually wrote quantity instead of quality, and it was a typo when it went to print.

I always thought Peavey was cheap junk for beginners? I had a Peavey guitar when I was 13, and a Peavey 2x12 Amp when I was 16. I didn't know how to play or understand anything about tone or instrument playability back then . . .

PV, unlike EBMM, manufactures gear for all niches in the market. Yes, they do make some beginner gear (cheap junk for beginners if you prefer). But they also make good quality pro guitars too. Regardless of your tastes, the Wolfgang was one of these. The new HP line, which includes the Wolf spinoff "HP Special" also seems to be good quality.

EBMM on the other hand focuses only on high end pro gear with the exception of the Sub line which is still not beginner gear. That's why it can be inaccurate to compare products from the two companies if you aren't comparing products geared for the same niche. Not in a million years does a Raptor compare to an Axis.

I also thought Yamaha was the largest manufacturer of musical instruments. PV might be the largest in North America though.

Bottom line: EBMM makes good stuff that competes well with anyone. That doesn't mean they're the only company that does this but they take a back seat to nobody. It disappoints me that my guitar hero for the past (almost) 30 years is turning into such a strange dude. That being said, thanks to him I do own some pretty wicked guitars.

I've played some American Wolfgangs and owned a Korean one too. Nice guitars. However, they just didn't approach the feel and finish of the Axis' I've played. Not suckin' up here just telling it straight.

On the other hand, my Peavey JSX is no beginner's amp.

Man, I loved Eddie back in the day. He was my favorite. Now he just makes me shake my head.

These days it's John Petrucci and his sig model. The finest guitar I've ever had the pleasure to own. They'll be burying me with mine.

I must admit to having a sunburst wolfgang along with my heard of axis SS's... it's ok... but it's just not the guitar the axis is. I had to have it COMPLETLY refretted within 6 months of getting it and peavey was no help at all. WORST factory fretwork I've ever seen. the MM is just flat out a better instrument. and don't even get me started on these stupid charvel "artist" series EVH guitars they're doing now. what a rip off.

william hung would be a nice choice for the next VH vocalist... they could cover that ricky martin song... wow. what an sight that would be...
