Question ebmm tuner chrome wear

Seems like on my ebmm basses the chrome is really tough. Except for the tuners. They become dull really fast! Annyone else here experience the same? And how do you polish them back up?

You touch the bridge every time and that doest get dull.... i just guess the chrome on the tuners is much thinner?
 
I believe, though I might be wrong, that the tuners are a nickel finish, not chrome like the bridge. Early 70s fender tuners are nickel, late 70s are chrome, you can see how they age differently. I actually like the way nickel ages better myself....
 
Imo aged hardware can be nice but not if half the bass looks new and the other half looks 20 years old. Some consistancy would be nicer. But on the other hand a fat layer of chrome would propably not work on the tuners because of the fine engraving of the logo.

What would be the purpose of touching the bridge? Tuners I understand, but the bridge?
 
You dont need to touch the bridge but some people do. The point is that wear on the tuners is way worse and goes faster then the controlls and bridge. The volume control is used every time you play much more then the tuners and this stays in shape without whiping it off every time. My tuners even became dull where the string wraps around. This is a place you almost never touch....
 
I thought it was just me with how my hands get warm when playing. I am now quite obsessed with wiping the tuners! If they are wiped the chrome is brighter for longer.

I don't think the new Bongo/Big Al/Reflex ones react like that.

Just a "tongue-in-cheek" remark ... IOW I agree. The bridge
is nothing that needs hands-on attention, except very rarely.
 
Yup, went through this just yesterday. The quick backstory is that I bought this used and received it a few days ago. It was the oddest thing that based on its age (2010-11) the body, neck, fretboard and paint were beautiful and perfect. But every chrome or metal part had some degree of an unusual amount of grime, gunk, tarnish-like residue that was in every nook and cranny. No idea what would cause that.

So after a few hours of disassembly, cleaning and light polishing I ended up with superb results. But after all that the tuner keys have a touch of honest tarnish from fingers. You can see in the pic that the bodies are now like new but the keys not so much. I'll try a little Simichrome down the road to see if I can improve them even more. Ill post back with those results.

But it was surprising to me that the keys themselves were so finish fragile. These are made in Germany so I assume a high quality Schaller mfg item but that is a bit of a weak spot IMHO.

Yep. Looks the same on all of my used ebmm basses. This must be a weak spot in ebmm hardware. Actually its possible that all the chromework is done in house except for the tuners wich are by schaller.
 
I got this set last year for a Christmas present, its Rosignolo Three Stage Cleaning System, part One is the cleaner, what I do is use this and a tooth brush to clean the machine heads with, it works a treat ! the rest of the set is great too! like I said I got it last year and there is lots of everything left, it works for me :)
