Fender Custom Shop

I want to ask Bovine a question:

I saw that you've got a pretty Custom Shop Fender Jazz in your collection.
The thing reminds me more of a well polished Mex or Jap Fender. It doesn't even have the string-thru thing.

Is there such a dramatic difference in the sound when compared with an american standard series jazz in order to pay so much for it?

It doesn't have a string-thru-body bridge because it's a more or less exact replica of a 1964 Jazz bass. Even the finish is nitro, which is kind of nice but kind of not, because it will pick up lots of little scratches pretty easily.

Was it worth it? Hmmm. That's a personal opinion and yours may be radically opposed to mine. CS basses can cost 3k and more. This one was used, briefly, and I bought it from a pal for about 1800 dollars. Cheap for a CS bass, not cheap for Mr Bovine.

It IS a very good Jazz bass, and bites the head off every other Jazz bass I've ever played.

I once had an Inca Silver MIA Jazz for which I paid 500 bucks. It was the 2nd best Jazz I've ever played. Is the CS J worth almost 4 times what that Inca Silver was worth? Not in terms of sound or playability, no, but I was at a point where I had the money for the CS Jazz and it has been a dream of mine for a while to own a Custom Shop, so....

Now, are they worth it? They are if you get a good one and you want a Custom Shop bass.

They aren't if what you're looking for is "value". Having said that, I do love mine and it ain't going anywhere.
