Finally tried EB flats.

First, thanks Tom for sending me these on your dime. You are one cool fella, and one of the folks that makes this place so great.

Ok, the EB flats, well. They are my new flat of choice. They sound just AMAZING on my StingRay 4. Just a great string from bottom to top, with nothing I dont like.

I was a hardcore TI Jazz Flat fan, but I really bleeb these strings have won me over.

I would've kept 'em. I just prefer the feel of rounds on the fingertips. Glad you are enjoying them.

I've got a set on my Bongo 5H. They're getting better sounding each week. And I like the tension on them better than the other guys.

I never have played them dang it. I have played flats since day one and TI are where I settled. You kids are either messing with grandpa or you know something.

Where would the EB flats sit on the tension rankings? Here's my ranking from high to low:

Roto
Fender
Chromes
Dean Markley
La Bella
TI

EB?

I would bet right around in the middle of TI and LaBella the way the kids are talking.

I actually find La Bellas and Chromes to have similar tension. Same with Fender and Roto, with these being more tension than La Bella/Chromes. EBs are perhaps slightly less than La Bellas in the same gauge (lets say group IIs vis' a vis 760FSs). EB flats have a lot more tension than TIs. They feel like normal strings.

Thanks for the comments Pete. I agree that La Bella and Chromes are similar, as are the Markleys. Let's try to rank the tension on a scale of 1-10:

Using a scale like that, would you put the EB flats at around 6?

Yeah, I think 6 would be about right. Also, they are very balanced from string to string in both tone and volume. And, unlike La Bellas, they don't seem to complain too much when you string them through body. I kinda want to try a set of Group Is (heavies) on my fretless Ray.

Let me add this, Mark, it is a little hard to compare because, as you know, flats seem to come in pretty strange gauges. In fact, I don't think I have had an exact match across any of these strings with respective sets.

You were right Andrew. I wanted these to be better for me than the TIs, but I really liked the TIs.

However, these EBs rock.

Mark, Id rate these as the happy medium between TI Jazz Flats and D'Addario Chromes in tension (at least the set I have).

Tonally they are just perfectly balanced, and respond to dynamics better than any flat Ive played.
